I took a breath and backed up, which got Newsom to relax.

“Okay, so who do I get in touch with out there?” I asked.

“We’re handling the original kidnapping angle, so we’ll visit DC and make a determination as soon as we can.”

Shifting back to calling it a kidnapping was a step in the right direction.

“We’ll see that you get introduced to the team out there, and you can discuss the bank case with them. Will that be acceptable?”

I was grateful for the Vince connection, because the federal government was now asking me if their plan was acceptable.

I nodded. “Of course.”

“How soon can you get to DC?” she asked.

“Probably quicker than you can, with the company jet. I can provide transportation, if you like.”

Parsons backed up. “Thanks, but we can’t. Text your contact info to my number on the card, so we can connect with you in DC. We’ll meet at the field office on Fourth Street Northwest.”

Newsom’s look said he wished they could have accepted the flight.

“Thank you.” I waved as the duo departed toward their SUV and immediately texted my phone number to Parsons. I sent a second text to Newsom for good measure.

The deputies that had been at the curb then got into their vehicles as well. Apparently their time babysitting the agents was over.

Five minutes later, I made an excuse that I had to leave and wished Brittney and Zack the best. Dad had called his flight department, and his jet would be fueled and ready for the trip to DC by the time I got to the airport.

Serena caught me on the way out. “Still not going to admit it?”

“Shhh. Surgery’s not till Friday.”

Outside, I composed a text to Cindy.

ME: Not in the rest of the week - No calls - Jay is in charge until I return

That should allow me to concentrate on the only thing that mattered—Debbie. The next few days were not for multi-tasking.

Once in my car, I dialed Vince in Boston.

He picked up after a few rings. “Hey, big brother, what has you calling this late?”

“I need the skinny on an FBI agent who just visited us out here by the name of Liz Parsons, says she knows you and Ashley.”

“Sure, I remember her. She worked with Ash before transferring to California.”

“Can I trust her, and what kind of cooperation can I expect from her?”

“Hey, Ash,” he yelled away from the phone. “Dennis wants to know if he can trust Liz Parsons, and will she cooperate with him?”

I heard the “Hell yes”part of Ashley’s answer, but I didn’t catch the rest.

Vince spoke into the phone again. “She’ll call Liz tomorrow and make sure you get full cooperation. What’s the case?”

“I can’t say.”

“Give me a break. You’re not keeping it from me. Ash can find out in ten seconds.”

“You have to promise to keep this to yourself. Just you and Ashley, nobody else—Dad’s orders.”
