He started listing names, and the seventh and last name was a surprise.

“And Jennifer Hanley.”

My heart skipped a beat. Without so much as a discussion, I was being shuttled off to a new company.

“If you seven could join me in the conference room after this, I’ll fill you in. HR has your new packages to go over as well.”

A hand went up.

“Yes?” Fisher said.

“Who will be running the new company?”

“Bob Shapiro will be going over as the new CEO.”

Shapiro was the current COO, second in command, so that made sense, and he seemed like a nice-enough guy.

This was all too much to process.

“When will this be announced?” someone else asked.

“It was put on the wire just as we started this meeting,” Fisher answered.

Another hand went up, and Fisher pointed to Vanessa.

“Can any of the rest of us apply to go with them?”

“Not at this time, but when they have openings in the future, I’m sure we’ll be kept in the loop.”

“Who will be running finance?” asked one of the other conscripts assigned to leave.

“Mark Timlin will be the CFO,” Fisher answered.

After that there were one or two other questions I didn’t follow. My head was spinning.

The group dispersed, and I wandered into the conference room on autopilot to hear my fate. The condemned walking herself to the guillotine, that was me.

Changing companies screwed up my entire plan. I’d lose access to the records I needed in this building. I wouldn’t be able to complete my revenge.

Fucking Benson had found a way to thwart me.

This couldn’t be happening.Poof. All my plans had gone up in smoke.

Chapter 5

Dennis

Jay Fisher was backat my door before the day was out. “Got a minute?”

“Sure.”

He closed the door behind him and took a chair. “This isn’t going to be easy.”

“It never is, but like I told you this morning, we have all quarter to make it work.”

“A lot more goes into a transaction than you realize. Bob needs a finance staff right away to handle things on his end.”

I nodded. “Yeah.”
