“It’ll be fun.”

That was one thing I could count on. Nephew or no nephew, I would enjoy the day with my girl.

My girlhad a nice ring to it, I decided.

I laced up my Adidas and headed for the door. “Come along, woman. We don’t want to be late.”

Downstairs, she went around to the passenger side of her car, expecting me to drive that shit bucket of hers.

Instead, I opened the door to the Jag.

She looked confused. “There’s three of us. We have to take my car.”

“Trust me, he’d rather ride with me. You can follow.”

She shook her head. “That’s a waste.”

I opened the garage door. I wasn’t giving her a choice. It was no contest that a boy would rather ride in the Jag any day of the week over her car.

She opened the rear door of her car. “He needs his booster seat then.”

A minute later Billy was strapped in. I revved the engine, and the cat roared.

His grin said it all.

The driveto my place hadn’t taken long in Saturday traffic.

Ramona cocked her head when I told her what we had in mind. “The beach?”

Her words were polite, but her scowl wasn’t.

Billy jumped off the couch. “I wanna go to the beach.”

Dennis stood with his hands in his pockets. “We won’t let the sharks get him.”

Ramona’s huff said that wasn’t the right approach. “I don’t know.”

Dennis looked up. “Or we could stay here and see if we can get marshmallows to stick to the ceiling.”

“Do they really stick?” Billy asked.

Dennis tousled Billy’s hair. “If you throw them hard enough.”

Ramona finally got Dennis’s sense of humor and smiled. “Maybe the beach would be better.”

Billy had another idea. “Can we do both?”

Dennis tousled his hair. “We don’t have time for both. Let’s get your swim trunks.”

They left us for a moment.

Ramona leaned close. “Is he always like that?”

“Only when he’s nervous.”
