“That’s it. That is all the advice I’m going to give you,” Nikki said. “It’s now in your hands as to what you do with it.”

He spun around toward his car and Road struggled. Every part of his brain was firing, telling him to fucking kill that bastard.

“Oh, and don’t you like my new haircut? Dinah did an amazing job.”

Nikki climbed into his car, and Road knew he couldn’t kill him. One of the rules of the club was never to act on his own. He wasn’t going to jeopardize the club for his own personal grievances.

Brute didn’t know, nor did any of the guys, what Nikki had done to him. That the man had laughed as he helped scar up his face. One day, he and Nikki would have their showdown, but not today.

And with that, he had no choice but to climb onto his bike and head back to Dinah. All the time, he kept thinking about the warning.

Nikki was right. It wouldn’t be long before Sergey would come after him. He’d known growing attached to Dinah would come at a cost.

He rode all the way to her house, not taking into account the scenery, or anything. All he could think about was Dinah—the threat to her life—and as he came to park on her driveway, he looked up at her house.

Sergey had told him to take care of the woman, that she had offended him, and Road had blindly followed those orders. He stepped up to Dinah’s house, and he didn’t even get a chance to knock at the door before she opened it.

“You do not have a single clue what happened to metoday,” she said. “That guy, Nikki Golubev, came to the salon and demanded I walk him to his car. I’m pretty sure he threatened me, but he said the craziest thing to me. He told me to think about who would give the order to hurt my mom. That’s crazy, right? I’m losing my mind, because Sergey, his father, gave the order.”

Road looked at her and thought that last night, when she’d looked up at him with that smile on her face and the twinkle in her eyes, it was probably the last time.

Nikki’s warning rang in his ear.

“I did,” Road said.

Dinah stopped. Her mouth opened and closed. She kept looking at him, and then she laughed. “What?”

“Sergey Golubev told me that there was a woman who had offended him and she needed to be taught a lesson. So I did, I helped him teach her. I was the one that sent the men to your house. To this house,” he said. “And, they were told to give it the Golubev stamp of approval.”

He had promised himself he would never hurt her again, but as he witnessed the tears filling her eyes, she took a step back.

“Get out,” Dinah said.

“I … I didn’t know—”

“Get out. Get out. Get the fuck out of my house, you piece of fucking shit! How could you do that? How could you allow them to do that?”

“Dinah, I didn’t mean—”

“No, get out.” The tears were falling down her face, and it broke his heart to see. “Get out.”

There was no reason to keep fighting. This is what Nikki had done. He’d not allowed him to end things with Dinah. He had made sure to put the blade in and twist it. The only woman who had ever made him feel like a man, who made him feel likehimself, and Nikki helped to destroy it.

Chapter Twelve

“I don’t know about you guys, but I’m kind of freaking out,” Igor said. “And that’s me saying something.”

Brute didn’t need to ask what they were talking about as he glanced across the yard to where Road was sitting on his own, a single tennis ball in his hand, as he tossed it against the wall.

It had been a couple of weeks since he ended things with Dinah. He’d known the brother was falling for the woman, but he didn’t quite understand what had happened so quickly for Road to become this. He didn’t like it. The brothers were getting a little worried. Road, keeping it all locked up inside, was not good for himself or the club. It would only be a matter of time before he cracked.

He tapped his son’s bottom, as he held him close to his chest. It had taken a couple of weeks, but he and Faith had finally agreed on calling him Jonah. Brute didn’t like the name but he’d already decided his club name was going to be Heartbreaker. He wouldn’t allow anyone to take it. He already had a little leather jacket in the works with his new title.

He also knew the club was getting antsy as they wanted to take on more of the Golubev. For Brute, he had given Nikki time, but he didn’t take orders from the Bratva. All he did was bide his time, and he already had what he needed in place to do a full-scale attack on multiple businesses. He just needed to wait for Golubev’s greed to get the better of him, and once everything was in place, it was only a matter of time to take it all out.

This was exactly what he was waiting for.

Getting to his feet, he walked over to Road, with his son in his arms, knowing Road would keep himself in check. The man was many things, but when it came to kids, he drew a line.
