“See here yo cocky ass go. Call your sister.”

“I will.”

“Tonight, baby,” she softened.

“You're right. I will.” She walked away and I looked at my phone. It was time to get it over with. I dialed her number and she answered on the second ring.

“Hey brother!” she sang in her peppy voice I was accustomed to.

“What up, sis’?”

“Nothing I was just calling because you texted me earlier. Everything okay?”

“That alone made me feel like shit. Big bro’ head been gone for a while. I’m sorry about that chump.”

“You sure everything alright? Are you going back into rehab?”

“Nah, no.” I stopped for a moment to gather my words. “I feel like I owe you an apology, Pria. I should have been there for you. I should have found a way to check on you while I was in the midst of all my shit.”

“No Prince. How could you have been when you were dealing with addiction? It wasn’t anything you could do until you got better.”

“Before that.”

Now it was her turn to be silent.

“What you doing this weekend? Can you come to me?” I asked.

“I can as long as you buy my flight.”

“You need money? I been sending you money every month. You need more?”

“No, I just walked away from the internship and I am starting my own publication. I had some unexpected expenses.”

“You should have told me.”

“You and Priest always give me money.”

“I’m sending you some money now. Buy your flight and whatever else you need. When you get here we will settle whatever else. Cool, Midget?”

“Thank you, Prince. I love you.”

“Love you, too. See you this weekend.”

I rose from the table and raked out the scraps on my plate. I washed my dishes and left the kitchen spotless. Le did not play that shit, and I didn’t want her to walk into any dishes in the sink. I turned my attention to our bedroom. I may not have had much energy but she was getting every ounce I had left.

Twenty bags of flour, five boxes of baking powder and baking soda, ten dozen eggs, ten bags of sugar, and powdered sugar as far as the eye could see. More and more mornings were starting off this way, and that was a flex within itself. I had just received my delivery and I prayed that me upping my order would make it last throughout the week. Prince’s crew had expanded, so while he worked, I was baking for the crew that was finishing houses and the crew that worked at the hotel.

I smiled as I stepped back and took a picture. I uploaded it to IG with the captionall in a day's work.I was really pumping the shit out. I saw now that it was in my blood. All it took was for me to trust myself. I was really out here standing on my own. I couldn’t say that fully but it was without the help of my sister who I cling to for comfort. I was changing. No, Prince was right, I was becoming and I loved that. Thinking of my sister I called her to see if she was free.

“Damn boo, I miss your cooking,” she said as soon as she answered.

“You must have just seen my IG.”

“I did. What you doing?”

“What you doing is the question. Seems like I was the last to know about this little marriage stunt you pulled. You knowyou have Chaz’s chest caving in.” A smile hung on my lips as I started putting the groceries away.
