“Good. Take my card and go to the dealership.”

“What?” Her eyes bugged out.

“You can hear. You need something, especially since you gone be selling shit. I don’t want you to feel like you have to stay here when my days get long. Plus I may have to beat one of these nigga’s ass for looking too hard.”

“Prince, stop.” She smiled.

“I guess I can rent something, " she sang, grabbing the card from my hand. She tried to walk away, and my hold on her tightened.

“Naw buy whatever you want. You thought I was playing last night.”

She put her head down for a moment and I knew the resistance would come.

“Prince I don’t have a problem with you doing for me. In fact, I’m grateful, but know I have had men buy me expensive things before. I am trying not to bring that into what we have going on, but I am human. I won’t be controlled by a man just because he buys me things.”

“You worried about the wrong thing Le Monroe. The last thing I want to do is control you outside of that room. Delay your gratification, maybe, but never control. Your body is mine but your mind is yours.”

“You don’t own my body, Prince.”

“You signed that contract last night, so that’s a done deal. Go and get your shit because that shit back home gone need to be sold anyway.” I pressed a kiss to her lips and walked away while I caught a glimpse of her looking at me like I’d lost it. I hated that damn car the moment I saw it and knowing who it was from made me detest it even more. Call that cocky, but my woman was not going to be driving around in some shit the last nigga bought her.

“Wait, Prince! If I drive your car how will you pick it up?”

“I’ll worry about the problems, Le. Just leave the keys in the car.”

I walked back inside hoping I could focus on getting some work done. I had to resist myself because currently, the only thing I wanted to do was crawl back inside my woman

Lesha

It’s about your sister, pick up.

I looked down at my phone, and my eyes inflamed. It was Devin. He had been trying it all day. He was changing his numbers and had called me from the 30thdifferent number in the last two hours alone. I looked around the empty house after receiving another message from an unknown number. Of course, he couldn’t tell me what it was about. I’d been calling Nesha since I got the message 15 minutes ago, and she had yet to answer. Devin always called but never had he used my sister as a way to get to me.

I shook my head and slapped my hands against the countertop. Prince would be home soon, and I was done with my daily routine of cooking, cleaning, and getting our dinner ready. It was so easy for me to fall into that rhythm. It was peaceful, really. Like a reprieve from having to walk around Flint. I was so tensed at every moment, knowing I would have to check someone for talking out of the side of their neck. No one knew me here as anything other than the cake lady and the boss’s woman. Prince and I stayed in our little cocoon not bothering anyone. Now here Devin was with his bullshit. The one percent chance that he actually had something legitimate to say made me do the thing I regretted when the next call came through. I skated down the hall and looked over my shoulder again before Iswiped to answer. If he was on bullshit I wanted to curse his ass one final time and be done with it before Prince came.

“What Devin?”

“I’m sorry, Tweet. Stop dodging me. I’m here.” His voice was laced with desperation.

“Why the hell would that make a difference to me? I’m not there. You texted me about my sister, so what is it? You know I don’t play about that.”

“No, I’m here. In Georgia.” My heart stopped. “That’s what I’m saying; you and your sister have been all over IG posting shit and sharing locations like it’s something safe to do. She in California. Why would I know that unless y’all are being reckless.” I didn’t have shit to say. I just knew he better not has brought his ass close to me. “I told you I can make all this shit go away. Y’all wouldn’t have to worry about this if you held out a little longer. I know the wedding shocked you, but I didn’t know how to tell you this. It’s all temporary and just for show. I’m still willing.”

“Fuck you Devin! Don’t call me again. I am changing my number, and you and everything you are saying can kiss my ass.”

“Tweet. I love you.”

“No, you shut the fuck up and listen to me for once! You hurt me worse than any man has, but you know what? It’s cool because I finally discovered it was me that allowed this shit for so long. Don’t call me. My sister and I have been fine without your so-called protection for this long. If you here, go home before my man beats your ass!” I hung up the phone and tossed my head against the wall. Why the hell did he feel he could pop up? He drove home one real point, though. If he could find me, so could anyone else. My sister and I were separated for the firsttime, and that left us more vulnerable. Then I remembered our pact. No more running.

“Did that feel good?”

“Shit!” Prince’s voice startled me, and I threw my hand across my chest.

“I, uh, I’m sorry he called.”

“Don’t be. You told him what you had to say, and you told his ass right. Next time he calls, it’s my turn to talk.”

He pulled me in for a kiss, and quickly, he was on to the next thing.
