“I like Tish. A lot.”

Holly tipped her head to the side, her eyes narrowing before a slow smile unfurled across her face. “Excellent. That’s how it should be. Now, you better not be an asshole. I don’t know enough about you to know if you are.”

Nate cut in, “Slow your roll, Holly. He hasn’t done anything to demonstrate he’s an asshole.”

“Maybe not, but you never know,” she grumbled.

“I’m not planning to be an asshole,” I offered.

“Well, what are you planning to do?”

Chapter Twenty-Six

Griffin

Well, what are you planning to do?

I shook my head to myself when I considered Holly’s question. My plan appeared to be hoping I would be able to see Tish again that very night.

Me: Can I stop by tonight?

I had to wait a solid half hour before she replied. I didn’t even want to admit to myself that I felt impatient with the wait.

“She’s working,” I told myself as I finished a workout on the treadmill in the small gym at the fire station.

Tish: I’d love to see you.

I was smiling down at my phone when Chase’s voice reached me. “Who’s that?”

I glanced up, still smiling. “Just a friend,” I hedged. “What’s up?”

“Was thinking you should come out to dinner with me and Hallie soon? You can come to our place.”

“I’d love that.” As soon as I said that, I hoped he wasn’t planning on tonight.

“You still staying out at Archer and Phoebe’s place?” he asked.

“For the time being. I’m scouting around for some property or a house to buy.”

“I actually know of one. It’s down the road from our place.”

“How about we pick a night for me to come out for dinner and I’ll take a look at the place on the way over?” I asked.

“Sounds like a plan. Let me check with Hallie about when. With a kid, we gotta work around that,” Chase explained.

“Do you know if it’s listed with a realty place? I can check to see when I can schedule a showing and let you know. Of course, I can come out for dinner anytime.”

Chase waggled his brows. He pushed away from the doorframe. “I’ll text you, and maybe you can fill me in on that.” He gestured toward my phone.

I chuckled, relieved he left it at that. I knew this thing with Tish was fresh, really fresh, but I didn’t want her to be my secret.

That evening, I turned down the road that led to Tish’s place, mentally clocking that it was pretty close to where Chase and Hallie lived. I shouldn’t be wondering if I was going to buy a place near Tish, but I was.

A few minutes later, as I was walking up the steps at her place, the door opened and Allie came walking out. I’d seen her at the station a few times since our first encounter here. She narrowed her gaze when she saw me, eyeing me skeptically.

“What are you doing here?” She actually closed the door behind her and crossed her arms.

“Stopping by to see Tish. Is that okay?”
