Page 86 of The Way We Play

“We’d be more than a few minutes late.” I glance over at her sitting there in her yoga pants and a hoodie unzipped just enough to give me a teasing glimpse of those perfect tits.

Her blonde hair is in two braids again, and she bites her full lip, doing a little shiver in her seat. I lift the back of her hand to my lips.

Damn this pretty girl sneaking past my walls. She really is a pixie, only now she’s sexy as hell.

“Maybe Miss Gina will take a long nap.” Her eyes widen as she threads her fingers in mine.

“That just leaves Claws.”

A frown curls her upper lip, and she exhales a huff as we approach the large house. We’re still holding hands, and I hate to let her go to shift the Jeep.

Once we’re parked, I walk around to help her out, and I notice the Bentley has a suitcase in the back.

My brow furrows, and I glance up to see the front door is open. “Maybe we won’t have to deal with Claws after all.”

“Seriously?” The excitement in her voice forces another grin across my lips.

When was the last time I’ve smiled this much?

“Oh, you’re here.” Miss Gina’s voice is disappointed. “I tried and tried to catch you before you made the drive.”

“What’s going on?” Rachel looks from the suitcase in the foyer to Miss Gina to Claws digging in her bag.

“We discussed it last night,” the woman explains. “Gigi has agreed to come back with me to Birmingham for Thanksgiving.”

“What?” Rachel’s voice goes high.

“I know!” Miss Gina holds her hand, making a little frown. “I’m going to miss you all next week, but it has been a while since I’ve seen Alexis and her family.”

I glance at the woman standing behind her. “As if spending the holiday with your real family is so outrageous. You’ll be back Saturday.”

“I won’t miss the pool tournament, will I?”

“The tournament is a week from Sunday, so you should be fine.” I step forward and take her suitcase. “I’ll check on things while you’re gone.”

“Of course you will.” Miss Gina pats my shoulder. “But do give yourself a holiday and spend time with your family.”

She and Rachel follow me as I carry the bag to Claudette’s car. She opens the trunk, and I put the suitcase inside.

“I left some cookies for you.” Miss Gina gives Rachel a long hug, and just before she lets her go, she speaks in her ear. “Use my guest house as much as you want.”

“Oh!” Rachel releases her, and the old woman gives her a wink.

Claudette is already in the vehicle with it running. Miss Gina turns one more time, waving in my direction. “Happy Thanksgiving.”

“You too.” Rachel steps back, standing in the driveway as they pull away.

She waves as if Miss Gina can see her, and I return to the house slowly, looking around the vast, empty space. The Christmas tree is lit, and it’s covered in tinsel and clear, plastic ornaments with red and green beads on them.

Crossing my arms over my chest, I think about what this means.

The door closes softly behind me, and Rachel enters the room. “That was a surprise. I guess we have a week off.”

Her voice is quiet, and I feel her presence at my back as an electric charge flows through the air. My chest is tight, and I slide a hand over the hunger in my stomach.

“I still have to fix that elevator.” Taking a step away, I turn to face her.

“Okay.” Her cheeks are flushed, and she’s breathing faster.
