“I’m so sorry.” She moves to her knees, wrapping her arms around my shoulders. “I’m so sorry, I was playing. I was being dramatic. I didn’t think?—”

“Hey, bro, you all right?” Jack is beside me, leaning down to grip my shoulder.

I lift my chin and meet his eyes, nodding, but I feel like the wind has been knocked out of me. “I’m okay. Rachel’s not hurt.”

“That was some completion.” Pride is in Jack’s voice, but I’m a wreck.

“Everything okay, Rach?” Dylan yells from the other end of the park.

“I’m okay!” Rachel yells to her, then she turns to me again, her pretty eyes round with worry. “I’m so sorry, baby, I didn’t even think how that would look.”

“No, don’t.” I pull her into a hug. “You were having fun. I overreacted.”

“Look at me.” She puts her hand on my cheek. “It won’t happen again. I love you.”

Forcing a smile, I exhale, helping her up as I stand. “Let’s finish this game. We’re going to win this.”

It’s a promise to her and to myself.

Rachel

We finally call the game, ending it with a friendly tie.

The truth is it could’ve gone on for hours with each side scoring every time they got the ball. For the guys, it was basically passing practice. Dylan and I were useless against them at our heights. The brothers had fun, and Austin was in heaven playing with them.

Walking back to the house, I still feel like shit for re-traumatizing Zane. I’m forming a plan to make it up to him later, when my grandmother’s text appears.

Gran

Happy Thanksgiving! Send me a photo of my two favorite grandkids.

I quickly grab my brother around the neck for a selfie and send it to her. In it, I’m smiling, while he’s looking away annoyed.

Happy Thanksgiving!Did you have a good day? How are you feeling?

Gran

Good. Visited with your aunt Joanne, ate too much.

Sounds like the perfect day. Edward is competing in a pool tournament Sunday. He might even win!

Gran

My goodness, he’s doing everything down there.

He’s having the best time, and we’ve got him enrolled in school. He’ll start after the holiday.

Gran

Oh.

Her response makes me frown. I’m about to ask what’s up when her next text sends ice through my veins.

Gran

Have you heard from your dad?
