“Right, I’ll stay frosty,” I tell him and hang up. I texted him on my way to bed this morning to let him know where I am and to also send someone to replace her door. I keep him informed just in case I need backup from him or the club. Now what to do with the sexy ass thief besides fuck her senseless. When she walked naked out of that shower, it took all my considerable strength not to snatch her ass up and fuck her against her dresser. Now, I need to get her to talk, but she doesn't trust all that easily.

She cooks!I think when I walk back in, and the house smells amazing. She is chopping something on the counter next to the stove.

“Don’t just stand there. Wash your hands and get to chopping,” she says without looking in my direction, and I do what she demands of me. I wash my hands, grab the tomatoes, and get to slicing. We make short work of putting this saladtogether, and a few minutes later, we are sitting at the table eating what she claims is a salad. To me, it’s a sub without bread.

“What dressing is this?”

“I made it,”

“Really?”

“Yes, it’s just lemon, honey, oil, I prefer avocado oil, and some seasonings.”

“It’s delicious.”

“Thank you.”

I lean back in the chair, completely full, surprisingly. “Why are you stuck here?”

“Cause I put more roots down than I anticipated,” she responds, answering without answering a damn thing.

“You’re being a smart ass. I don’t think you understand the gravity of your situation,”

“Trust me, I understand my situation, but that still doesn’t mean I am going to trust you with my shit.”

“Well, we’ll be in this house until you talk or until I kill you,” I tell her, being upfront, and if looks could kill, I would be the dead one in here.

“Why do you even care? I mean, you are planning on killing me anyway so why does it matter?”

“Truthfully, I don’t, but if I help you find Judah, I want to know why. I am not bringing trouble to no one's door, at least without knowing what I’m getting him and I into.”

“Well, I guess we’re at an impasse then, aren’t we?”

“I guess we are.”

CHAPTER 5

Ronnie

Uncle Lennon?

How is my Ronnie?

Lost without you and Momma.

You’re in a tight spot, but you have done well for yourself. You flourished here in New Orleans by following your gut. What’s your gut telling you now? Trust your gut, and stop second-guessing yourself. I taught you better than that. I love you, Niece.

I wake with a start. I hadn’t dreamed of him in years, so why did I now? Lion springs up, gun in hand, immediately on alert.

“What is it?” he asks, looking around the room.

“A dream,” I tell him.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah,”

“Alright, try to go back to sleep,” he murmurs, his voice a low rumble in the dim room. As soon as I settle back down, he pulls me close, his arm wrapping around me, solid and steady. For the first time since all this chaos began, the tightness in my chest loosens. My breathing slows, and sleep gently pulls me under.
