“I’m sorry, come again,”

“You heard me, and it’s all your money.”

“I wanna be mad at you, but I can’t because you are right. I cut off all communication when I decided to stay and help my dad out, but it would have been nice to know I have that kind of money,”

“Why did you cut communication with me?”

“Cause deep down I really wanted to go with you, and I knew the desire on top of your determination would have had me folding, so instead I avoided it,” I shake my head because whether I like it or not it makes sense. “But I still have to go home, Gabe. I have a job,”

“Quit,”

“Oh, Tameka would love that,” she says, and I assume Tameka is her boss.

“Fuck her! You have lived your whole life living for other people, your parents, the church, and now your job, but what do you want? Do you still want to sing?”

“Gabe,”

“Stop thinking, stop being scared. What do you want?”

“To sing. To live.”

“Then do it dammit! You have me, and you have a safety net. Stay with me,”

“Shack up with you?”

“No, marry me,” slips out, but I am not mad at it. She bolts upright, looking at me like I glow in the dark.

“Marry you? We barely know each other,”

“Now that’s a lie,”

“We haven’t talked in almost two decades, Gabe,”

“When I was inside of you, did it feel like you didn’t know me?”

“Gabe,”

“Answer the question,”

“It’s sex, Gabe, it’s normal to feel connected during sex,”

“Another lie. Why are you doing this? Why are you finding reasons to not be together? Why can’t you find reasons for us to be together? I love you, I know you, you make me happy, and I know I can make you happy. So marry me.”

“This is crazy,”

“Is it though? If you can say when you are ready to cross over, you will be able to look at this moment and not have regrets, say no and I will enjoy my time with you and wish you well when it’s all over. But if you know deep down in your heart you will regret this moment if you don’t take the chance, don’t grab the chance with both hands and live this flicker of a life with me, say yes,” I say wondering where that passionate speech came from.

“This is crazy,” she repeats. Carefully, I pull away from her and walk towards my dresser. There is a jewelry box, and I pull open a drawer I haven’t touched in years, but when I do the box is sitting there.

“I bought this with my first advance,” I tell her handing her the box once I reach the bed. Taking a deep breath, she opens the box with shaking hands to see the three-carat princess-cut diamond set between a pair of treble clefs.

“Gabriel,” she breaths out, tears welling in her eyes. “It’s gorgeous,”

“You were always the plan, Soul, you were always my destination, my home, my heart. I may have come home for my father but make no mistake, I was coming for you soon. So put both of us out of our misery and be my wife. Allow me to be your husband.

“Yes.”
