“Mercy, Lukas,” she whispered. “You can’t be saying that on the phone like that!”

He chuckled, hopping onto his Swamp Dragon. “Why not?”

“I gethaunt!”

He busted out laughing at the middle-school term. “Ma Petite Rebelle, you shouldn’t say things that make me crazy for you.”

“I don’t! You’re just crazy!”

His laughter echoed across the bayou as he prepared for liftoff. “My dragon’s about to say hi to you.”

“Lord, let me hang up before you break my eardrum.”

“I love you baby. Be so very fucking safe.”

“So very fucking safe. You always find a way to get fucking in everything. I love you too, Lukas.”

“How much?” he asked, loving their competition game they had going on with that.

“As much as you love fucking,” she whispered.

He laughed. “Damn,thatmuch?”

“I knew you’d like that one. How much you love me?”

“More than all the bats in all the whole world.”

“Awww,” she moaned. “You always win and I love it,” she sighed.

“Bye Petite Rebelle. Be good while I’m not around.”

“And bad when you are?”

“Oui. Very.”

“Yes sir Mon Bien Monsieur.”

“Hanging up now.”

“Byyyyeee.”

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Bullets slipped out of the house at noon-nap time with his coffee and sat on the front porch with his phone. He pulled up Eveque’s number and dialed him.

“Hey Boss,” he said when he picked up. “I got a Kaj problem I need to tell you all about.”

He gave a low groan. “Hold on.”

Bullets moved the phone from his ear when the sound of lip action said he’d interrupted fun times at lunch.

“What problem,” he muttered when back.

Bullet’s took a quick sip of his coffee. “Your Pah-Pah gave him a dowry list.”

“A dowry list?”

“Yep.”
