She froze, staring at him. “What?”

“Keith Grimes. I know what happened.”

Panic sledge-hammered her and she spun around, her brain hitting full blownrunmode. Run from the name, run from the face, run from the nightmares that went with it. The sound of her own name echoed behind her like a bad omen and then suddenly she was bouncing off a wall of flesh in her path. Strong hands grabbed her before she could hit the floor.

“I have her.”

The sound of Rukem’s voice sent her back into the wall of flesh she’d run into.

“What is wrong with her?”

“I want to go home, please take me home I just want to go home.”

“I’ll take you wherever you want to go,” Rukem swore.

She shook her head, fighting to breath, not able to even open her eyes. “Please take me home.”

“I’ll take her,” the deep voice said. “Leave her.”

“Darby, I’m sorry.”

“I want to go home,” she gasped, when his beautiful voice brought another kind of panic. “Please take me home.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Darby opened her blinds from her small bedroom again, finding the black sports car still there. She’d waited to see if he would come knock but he didn’t. Was he expecting her to go to him? Not happening. He’d have to sleep out there.

Her phone buzzed and she hurried to it, then stopped herself from snatching it up like a desperado. She sat on the bed and leaned over, looking at the screen. Seeing it was him, she picked it up.Please talk to me.

She chewed on her thumbnail, staring at his words then texted back.I’m not talking about my past. It’s buried and staying buried. If you try to dig it up more than you seem to have, I never want to see you again. Because she wouldn’t be able to face him if he knew what happened. It took her years to face herself in the mirror and forgive herself. She was not going back to that place in her mind. Ever.

I won’t talk about that or ask ever again. Please come talk to me. I need to see you're okay.

I’m fine.

Then I need to just see you.

She stared at those words, closing her eyes through a shaky breath. There was no going back to business as usual. Not after this.

I’m not leaving until I see you. And talk to you.

You don’t have this right even as my boss. I’ll call the cops.

Call them.

You’ll go to jail, how will that look on your Kingly record.

I don’t care.

You care about getting your way, I imagine you’ve never been told no a day in your life.

I care about you, and I’ve been told no, many times for many things. Come talk to me. Please.

God, he wasn’t going to leave it. She made her way quietly past her sleeping dad and slipped out. She aimed her eyes at the ground leading her to the car then the door, opening it. She dropped into the low seat and shut the door, immediately in pheremone hell with the sinful smell of him.

“Look at me,” he said softly.

“I can’t."
