"It was fine," she says, forcing a smile. "I'm sorry, but I can't stay."

"Kara, is everything okay?"

She backs off the porch using his handicap ramp. "I just have to get home. I'll see you later."

Running, she heads to her house three streets down, and she all but bursts into tears when she sees Chance's motorcycle parked outside.

"There you are," Chance says, turning around the moment she walks in. "I was wondering if I was going to have to come find you. If maybe Frank decided to chomp on you instead."

"Chance," she says, panting and out of breath.

His face changes from desire to immediate concern. "What's wrong, baby?"

"I saw... I saw..."

The vomit rises in her throat, and she runs to the sink as her breakfast makes an encore appearance. Chance's large hand rubs her back and says, "It's okay, Kara. It's okay, baby."

Cleaning the sink quickly and rinsing out her mouth, she turns and looks at him with wide eyes. "I saw Dani."

He steps back quickly, a look she can't discern on his face. "Excuse me?"

"That's what Frank was fussing about. He saw a woman in the basement, and it was Dani. On Elm Street-"

"Youthinkit was Dani."

"No, I saw her. She's dirty, and God, she looks so sick, Chance. Like she hasn't eaten in days. But it was Dani."

Shaking his head, he says, "Kara, Dani's dead. She died in a fire."

"Do you really believe that?" she almost shouts. "That story has never made any sense, Chance. You and I both know that."

"Kara-"

"A Kingsmen came out and shouted at me to leave. A Kingsmen lives in the house that I saw Dani in the basement of? That's not a coincidence!"

"She's gone, Kara. I thought we'd dealt with that. Things are finally good between us again. I don't understand why you have to ruin it."

Ruin it? "Chance-"

"Goddammit, Kara!" he shouts. "We were finally moving forward. Finally living our lives again, and then you go and do this? Why can't you just let us finally be happy?"

"Go and do what?" she asks. "Tell you I saw the wife of our President, one of my good friends, alive? That she isn't dead like we think?"

"It's not Dani!"

"You don't know that!"

Putting his hands in the air, he steps backwards and shakes his head. "I'm not doing this. Dani's dead. We buried her, and you were at her funeral. We saw-"

"It was Dani!" she shouts, and she can't understand why he won't even entertain the idea that maybe, just maybe, it was all a ploy. "I know it was, and we have to go and help her. She's chained up in a fucking basement, Chance. She's been chained up for over two years. Who knows what these monsters did to her."

"What monsters? Hmm? You think the Kingsmen took her and just never said a word to us? That they'd take the President's wife and not take credit for it? But a better question is, who the fuck did we bury if it wasn't Dani? Who would've been in that house instead of her?"

This isn't Chance. The man she loves would be running to find the house with her. Breaking the window and jumping in to save her friend. His best friend's wife. Pulling her out of whatever hell she's living in.

"You know what? Forget it," Kara says and turns towards the door.

"Where the hell are you going?"
