Jazz let out sigh of relief despite the heavy weight still lingering in her chest.

“Jazz?”

“What if I can’t handle this?” she questioned in a whisper, her heart breaking at the thought.

“Don’t decide anything until you’ve had a chance to calm down,” her friend warned, shaking her head. “Right now, your emotions are still high from the possibility that Leo was hurt, so give it a bit to settle.”

Jazz nodded. Winter was right. Now was not the time to be making decisions.

Her phone chimed with a text alert.

“Is it Leo?” Winter asked anxiously.

“No,” she groaned, checking her messages. “It’s just my parents.”

JJ, your dad saw the news and called me. Is Leo ok?

“They’re saw the news and are worried about Leo,” she added, thinking back to how different things were now.

Their relationship was a work in progress, but it was already more than she’d ever dreamed possible. Her mom and dad had made a lot of changes in an effort to mend the rift between them. They not only accepted the choices she made, but they also supported them. Her dad even let Leo call him Reggie now, which was wild.

“She’s calling.” Winter pointed to the phone in Jazz’s lap, now illuminated with her mom’s photo.

“Hey, Mom.”

“Have you heard anything?”

“Not yet.” She swallowed hard. “From what we’ve seen on the news, they’re having a hard time containing the fire. A wall collapsed and someone was hurt but they didn’t say who.”

“Was he taken to Memorial?” her mom asked quickly. “I can make a call and find out who it is.”

“Win already tried calling, but they wouldn’t even say who it wasn’t.”

“Let me make some calls. There are rules against it, but I’m sure I can wiggle some information out of the someone in the ER. Give me a few minutes.”

With those words, her mother hung up. Most likely speed dialing the local hospital to find out who the mystery firefighter was that they’d admitted earlier.

If it was Leo…

Swallowing hard, she fought against the rolling nausea terrorizing her stomach. The last thing she needed to do was get sick again, but her nerves were shot. With her mind thinking of all the different scenarios where Leo could get hurt or potentially killed, she kept her gaze focused on the crew working tirelessly behind the reporter on the live news coverage. There was no way for her to see who was who, but that didn’t stop her from trying.

“Yes!” Winter shouted, startling Jazz out of her daze.

“What?” she asked, leaning in to look at her friend’s phone.

“Will finally has signal.” Winter turned the screen towards her. “He’s calling the chief now.”

Chapter 29

“It wasn’t Leo.”

Jazz slumped in relief the second her mom’s words registered. “Thank god.”

“Who was it?” Winter asked, leaning forward. “Did they say?”

“They wouldn’t give me the name. All they were able to do was confirm it wasn’t him,” her mom answered over speakerphone.

Jazz closed her eyes. She was so overwhelmed she felt dizzy. Her mother and Winter were still talking but the words sounded wobbly and distorted.
