“You’re a dirty, dirty man,” she groaned, her face pink despite having heard this from him before.

“I’m your dirty man,” he reminded her with one last smacking kiss against her lips. “How was your first time parking, sugar?”

“Parking?” Jazz snorted, looking up from the mess she was trying to clear up with wide eyes. “We did a whole lot more than just park.”

“We sure did,” he told her with a grin.

“Thank you.”

“What exactly are you thanking me for?”

“For everything,” she answered with a happy sigh.

“You deserve it.” Leo took the panties she was holding out of her hand and stuffed them in his pocket. “No point in putting those back on since they’re just going to come again off the moment that we get home.”

Chapter 27

“Hey, Leo,” Nix yelled from the kitchen at the firehouse. “Do you have a second?”

“What’s going on?” he asked, detouring into the kitchen, his own stomach rumbling with the reminder he hadn’t eaten yet. Leo grabbed a plate out of the cabinet. “Is there any more of that ham leftover?”

“I saved you some,” Nix said with a nod at the packages still on the counter. He passed the loaf of bread over with a frown on his face. “Did you read the report from the chief yet?”

Leo shook his head. He had been running late to the station this morning after catching Jazz in the shower before she left for work. He had zero control when it came to his woman, especially when she was naked and wet.

“What’s up?”

“The investigations into those warehouse fires have come back as arson instead of electrical issues or lightning strikes,” Nix mumbled, his mouth half full of food.

He rocked back on his heels. That wasn’t something he’d expected to hear.

“When did the report come in?”

“Early this morning. I guess the insurance company that holds the policy for the old brewery hired an investigator of their own to dispute the payout. They managed to get tape from the new traffic light cameras on the corner, and there, clear as day, is someone piling old pallets against the building and dousing them with a gas can.” Nix drummed his knuckles on the counter. “We’ve got a firebug on our hands. No doubt about it.”

“What about the others?” he asked, wondering how something like this could have originally been missed. They’d all mentioned the increase in calls, but he hadn’t thought much of it.

“The report lists another two that also had traces of accelerant on the backside of the buildings,” Nix said as he began to clean up.

“Anything caught on nearby security feeds?”

“No security feeds, the buildings back up to an alley that’s used for the dumpsters, but they did have a witness saying she saw a man walking into the area with a gas can. She assumed he was walking to his car but didn’t stick around to find out.”

“I don’t blame her,” Leo said with a heavy sigh. The last thing he needed right now was a crazy man with a gas can lighting shit on fire. Firefighting was dangerous enough without random acts of insanity making their job harder. “Any leads?”

“Not yet,” Nix answered with a shake of his head.

“Damn.”

“Chief said they’re reopening four cases. I’ve been wondering all morning how we managed to miss something like this. I’m going to drive myself crazy if I keep thinking about it,” Nix sighed, running a hand through his hair. “My shift is ending soon, but can you text me if they find anything out?”

“Of course.”

“Thanks, man.” Nix left with a wave.

Leo finished cleaning up after them and got to work.

It wasn’t until late afternoon, when he heard the familiar laughter of his woman, that he decided to take a break.
