“So, what’s the real problem? The fact that her parents treat her like a kid, and she’s let them up until now?” Nix prodded. “From everything I’ve heard, she’s tried to toe the line because they were paying for school and shit.”

“She hasn’t fucking told them about us, all right?” he growled, finally losing his patience. “That’s what I have a problem with. We’ve been practically living together this whole time and they don’t even know she’s seeing someone.”

“You sound like a fucking girl right now,” Nix told him with a snort. “Jesus man, give her a break already. Has she evenseenher parents since y’all hooked up?”

“No,” he answered, the wind slowly going out of his sails.

“I suggest you get over yourself.” Nix tossed his empty bottle into the recycling container against the wall. “If you don’t, you’re gonna lose that girl to someone who’s not a fucking moron.”

The thought had Leo instantly on edge. “Like who? You?”

“I would be one lucky sonofabitch if she looked my way,” the other man admitted with a tilted smile. “But she’s not like the pole bunnies that make the rounds, man. If you break her heart, I don’t think she’ll ever come back around.”

“Fuuuck.” Leo leaned back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling. “How do I fix this? I need to fix this.”

“You need a plan,” Nix pointed out. “And it probably needs to include confronting her folks at some point.”

“I would guess sooner rather than later.” Leo grabbed three darts and stood behind the line they had taped to the floor. “I can fix this. I’m going to fix this.”

Throwing the darts in rapid succession, Leo got a bullseye on his first throw. Now all he needed to do was transfer some of that bullseye luck to the clusterfuck with the Kingsfords and he’d be golden.

Chapter 21

“Kill me now,” Jazz groaned from her position on the floor in front of the couch.

“How the hell did you get on the floor?” Winter’s husky voice came from somewhere above her.

She turned her head on the rug and moaned. “I think I slid off the couch sometime after Return ended. I vaguely remember trying to get another bag of chips which I obviously failed at doing.” Jazz waived her hand in the general direction of the kitchen. She hadn’t even made it to the halfway point. Dropping her arm to the floor with a thud, she let out a gust of air and immediately grimaced. That was a mistake. Her breath was deadly.

“You’re the nurse…am I gonna die?” Winter asked, tossing an arm over her eyes with a wince.

“If you die, I’m following right behind.” She pushed herself up, her back protesting the time she’d spent on the floor. “Jesus, I’m too old to sleep on the ground.”

“What the fuck are you mumbling about over there?” Winter asked as if she just now realized Jazz had been talking this entire time. “I can’t believe we finished off all of the liquor I brought.”

“Shhhhhh,” she hushed as her stomach turned. Just talking about everything they’d drank the night before made her feel sick. Jazz crawled into the large chair in the corner and pulled her legs up to her chest. “My stomach hates me right now.”

“Jazz, I think I’m gonna puke,” Winter moaned.

Shooting out of her chair as if electrified, Jazz knew what she had to do—she just hoped she had the stomach to pull it off.

“Get up.” She nudged Winter’s leg with her knee.

“No,” her friend protested weakly. “There’s only room for one of us on that door, Rose. You go on without me.”

Jazz rolled her eyes at the dramatics. “Get. Up.”

“You’re supposed to say, I’ll never let go.” Winter looked up at Jazz through the veil of her curly hair.

“I’m too hung over for you to be Jack right now, Win. Get up, we’re going to get biscuits and gravy.” She gave the couch a nudge. “C'mon, weirdo.”

“Nooo,” her friend groaned out as if she were mortally wounded.

“You know it’s the only way.” Jazz held out her hand to her friend. “Fine…I’ll never let go. You happy now?”

Winter took her hand with a grumble. “Only because you said the magic words.”

“The buses are running this morning, so we don’t even have to drive.”
