“You get that idea right out of your head.” Winter slung her arm over her shoulders and pulled her in for a side hug. “No offense, but your mom has always been kind of a bitch. You just never had it directedatyou before because she’s always gotten her way.”

“I have no one to blame but myself,” Jazz admitted with a heavy sigh. “I fucked up big time.”

“Where does this leave you and Leo?”

“I don’t know.” Just thinking of him had her sniffling again. “He’s so amazing, Win. He’s smart and funny and everything that I never knew I wanted. I know it’s only been a few weeks, but I think I love him.”

“It was the same with me and Will. One date and that man was ready to marry me.” Winter snorted. “I was ready to say yes after the second.”

“When you know, you know,” Jazz whispered.

“That’s what Will always says.”

“Leo too.” She finished off her bottle with a gulp.

“Have you thought about calling him?”

“I did call him,” she admitted with a grimace. “He didn’t answer, so I left a really awkward message.

“Oh,” her friend said with a wince.

“And then I texted him. Twice. I was going to text him again but then realized how stalkerish that would be and stopped. He probably thinks I’m a psycho.”

“He doesn’t think you’re a psycho,” Winter argued with a shake of her head. “If anyone is crazy, it’s Reginald and Victoria. I don’t think he’s dodging you; he’s probably just thinking about things. Give him a little time. You guys got the shit end of the stick today.”

“True,” she agreed. “I just want to tell him that he’s perfect and I’m sorry.”

Winter nudged her with her elbow. “I wouldn’t go that far.”

They both laughed.

“What are you going to do about your parents?”

“There’s going to be a lot of changes,” she promised. It was going to be an uphill battle, but it was one Jazz was willing to fight.

“You’re keeping the job?”

“Yep,” she said with a nod.

“And you’re not dating anyone else they set you up with, right?”

“Right.”

“That’s the Jazz I was waiting to see.” Winter cheered with a slow clap. “Now, we just need to get Leo back in the game and things will be golden.”

“It might be too late,” she sighed sadly. Her spine may have shown up a bit too late to save the day.

“That’s bullshit,” her friend snapped. She pointed a finger at Jazz. “You’re a fucking catch.”

“I totally am!” Jazz agreed, feeling better and maybe a little tipsy.

“You know what we’re going to do?” Winter asked with a hiccup.

“What?”

“We’re going to paint our nails and have a girl’s night,” she decreed, reaching for the remote on the coffee table. “This calls for a Rings marathon, extended cuts of course.”

“But it’s Sunday,” Jazz interrupted already thinking ahead. She looked at the clock on the wall and blinked. They’d be up well into the night if they did that. “Don’t you have to work tomorrow?”
