W: Good. Russo texted and said the fire’s being a bitch and won’t die. They’re going to be handling it all night so I shouldn’t expect to see Will anytime soon. I would say the same goes for Leo now too.”

She frowned at her phone, biting her lip.

J: That’s it??

W: Yep

She let out a long sigh. That wasn’t much but at least it was something.

J: How do you do this?

Her phone vibrated with an incoming call. When her bestie’s goofy picture flashed on the screen, she didn’t hesitate to answer.

“How the hell do you deal with this all the time?” she asked, her voice sounding as weary as she felt.

“I just do. I guess it helps that he was a firefighter when we met so I knew what I was getting into. It doesn’t make it easy, but I deal with it the best I can.” Winter crunched on something as she spoke. “Will’s good at his job and I know he’s not going to take any unnecessary risks.”

The crunching continued.

“Are you eating popcorn?” she asked, trying to figure out the source.

“Ummm…yeah, I guess you could say that is one way I deal with the calls from the station too. I make sure that I have the cupboard stocked for when I need to stress eat.”

“That sounds healthy,” Jazz pointed out dryly. If she binged when she was stressed, she’d be eating 24/7. “Wait, why are you at home? What happened to the suite at the hotel?”

Winter sighed sadly. “I didn’t want to stay in the suite if my man wasn’t going to be there to help dirty it up. I’d rather be home with Buck anyways. He’s a good dog to have around on nights like these.”

“I’m sure he is,” she agreed, remembering how sweet the mutt was.

“I was worried I was going to have to vacuum, but he’s done me a solid and eaten every piece of food I’ve dropped so far. He’s such a good boy!”

Jazz could tell Winter was talking more to the dog than she was to her at this point.

“Why can’t we be the type of people who work out when they get stressed?” She wondered out loud, reaching for a handful of kisses from the bowl at the end of the couch.

“I don’t think those people actually exist,” her buddy argued. “It’s an urban legend started by exercise companies just to trick people into buying shit.”

“Maybe it’s the exhaustion that’s supposed to be replacing the stress,” Jazz proposed, unwrapping another chocolate as she thought on it. That idea seemed to make more sense in her opinion.

“Meh, I’m still calling shenanigans,” Winter said with a snort. “Speaking of shenanigans…”

“Yeah,” Jazz sighed. She knew what was coming.

“You and Leo?”

“Yeah, me and Leo.” She pushed the candy dish as far away from her as she could without getting up. “He’s just so…and I’m so…ugh. What the hell am I even doing here?”

“You’re having fun, Jazz,” her friend reminded her. “And I don’t blame you one bit. I always thought he was dreamy…not as hot as Will, but still hot as fuck. Tell me everything. Don’t leave anything out.”

“There’s not much to tell,” she sighed, shaking her head even though Winter couldn’t see it. “We kissed, he saw my flamingo bikini bottoms, and then his phone clamjammed us.”

“Your flamingo what?” Winter asked with a laugh.

“Laundry day is tomorrow so you know what that means.” Jazz reached for the bowl of candy again before she could stop herself. She had no willpower when she was anxious. “At least I was wearing these and not my period panties.”

Winter let loose a loud and obnoxious laugh from her end of the call. The sound forced Jazz to move the phone away from her ear and roll her eyes.

“Oh God, what if you had been wearing the pair that I got you for your birthday?” Winter snickered. “Can you imagine?”
