It was rich and deep with metaphor. Complicated and driven.

It was brave and real and not at all like the cagey man she’d hung out with last night.

She stared at the constellations on her ceiling and willed them to sparkle. Just a little. To reflect a partial glow of the stars she knew were way above the city somewhere.

Song after song after song played through her room and her soul.

On one hand she wanted to turn it up as loud as it would go and rock out. On the other, she didn’t want to miss a single word or chord progression. She wanted to memorize every bridge that gave her goosebumps and figure out how to get the soundinsideof her.

The lead singer was okay. Zara had some notes she could give her, but the band was fucking mint.

She knew she’d decided earlier that day to give space between her and Asa. But her fingers itched to send him a text. Her brain yearned to create music with him.

He should be on a stage somewhere.

He shouldn’t be locked in a dark studio mixing jingles for an all you can eat shrimp feast.

He should be writing songs for the biggest names in the industry. He should be winning awards.

He should be a star.

So even though she shouldn’t, even though it might cause more trouble for both of them, she texted him anyway.

CHAPTER FIVE

LANDMINE

ASA

It had been a week since he’d started getting texts from Zara.

The first one had come in less than a day since they’d said goodbye.

Z: I hate myself for not knowing anything by Winking Pete. You are amazing.

He hadn’t replied.

One, he didn’t know what to say. Her text had been hugely unexpected and made him feel a certain way.

Two, after reading fifty articles that basically all said the same thing,“Look at this loser taking advantage of Zara. He’s going to ruin her life,”he didn’t think he should say anything to her at all.

She’d mentioned that she already had a finished album which meant that she was going to need to start promoting soon. Thelast thing she needed—the last thing he wanted—was to corrupt that plan.

It didn’t matter that what was being published was a lie. The public believed it and the public’s opinion made and destroyed careers. Sometimes within hours.

Zara’s people had gone on the offense right away and there were now competing stories that painted Logan in a less than favorable light.

But all of that was so far from Asa’s world, he had no idea what to make of it.

Also, he didn’twantthose things to be part of his world.

Fame, notoriety, attention? Fuck. No.

Sure, he’d gone to LA at Nikki’s urging to “make connections.” But he’d never been sure that was something he wanted to pursue again.

Now he was certain he didn’t want that life.

He wanted no part of it.
