She’d looked up at him, those blue eyes big and round, her lips forming a stunned “o.”

He almost hadn’t let her go.

“Are you dating anyone these days, André?” Allison asked.

“No,” he replied, never taking his eyes from where Nikki sat beside Asa.

Was it his imagination, or was she looking right at him?

She sang “Vienna” much the same way she used to sing it in the shower which also happened to be the way she used to kiss him. Slow, deep, and sweet.

He should’ve left when the song was over.

But he stayed because his head and his heart were trying to tell him something. They’d been trying to tell him something for years where Nikki was concerned. And he was pretty sure he finally heard what they were saying.

Listen.

Asa began to play again, and it was familiar but he didn’t identify it in time.

Nikki brought the microphone to her mouth and began to sing “Long Road to Ruin” by the Foo Fighters.

Chills raced over his arms, and he leaned forward.

The entire bar fell into a quiet repose.

Nikki didn’t have the kind of powerhouse vocals of the big singers. Hers were more of a sweet, gentle rain. A refreshing sound to refill a weary soul and bring it back to life.

He’d never heard her sing this song before and maybe that was why it all felt so new.

Or maybe he was new, and he was just now realizing it.

She held his gaze as she sang about sealed fate and not turning back. Her every word seemed to strip him bare and demand he confess.

Confess that no matter how much time had passed, he was still hers.

And he always would be.

CHAPTERTEN

CRUEL SUMMER

NIKKI

After the intensity that had been her Saturday night, Nikki decided she needed a break from all of the meaningful yet confusing exchanges she’d been sharing with André.

Mostly it was the eye contact.

She thought she kept seeing something that wasn’t there and it was starting to drive her crazy.

On Sunday she only left the house to get that massage with her gift certificate. It had helped to relax her but only until Monday when she’d gotten to work and saw his car already there.

She went to her office and closed the door.

She could do this.

A couple days of not seeing him or talking to him and this little crush she’d developed would clear right up. Because it wasn’t like she wasreallycrushing on him. It was probably just pheromones and her body remembering his body.

But it would fade, and she’d be fine.
