“So, the benefit…” he said after a beat.

She braced. This was where he would tell her thanks but no, thanks, or that he was taking someone else.

And honestly, she should take the out. It had been absolutely ridiculous to offer to go. Even though it made sense to show up on behalf of the studio. She’d offered because she’d been mesmerized by his muscles. But now he was covered again and she was back in her right mind.

“Thursday. It starts at six. Black tie—”

“I can meet you there,” she said before he offered to pick her up.

And again with the volunteering!

She had no one to blame but herself that time.

André’s eyes narrowed slightly as he zeroed in on her. He took two steps closer. “Are you sure you want to go to this? It has all the things you hate, including me.”

“I don’t hate you, André,” she said before she could stop herself.

His eyebrow twitched in surprise.

Is that what he thought? That she hated him?

Why did that make her sad?

She cleared her throat. “And it will be good for the studio to have some positive exposure. People adore me. I’m very lovable.” She posed, tilting her head, and resting her cheek against the back of her left hand as she flashed a demure smile.

He smirked but the suspicion didn’t leave his gaze.

“I’m not worried about you being lovable. That’s a given.” He licked his lips and planted his hands on his hips.

Her heart dipped.

His phone rang and he answered it, still staring at her like he had more to say.

“Javi,” he said into the phone. “Yeah. I’ll be right there.” He hung up and slid the phone into his back pocket. “What do you want for lunch today?”

She blinked a few times. “What?”

“Lunch. Thai okay?” he asked, his expression too serious and too unreadable.

“I like Thai,” she replied.

He nodded once and then turned around and left.

The music shut off and she heard the back door open and close.

Nothing had happened.

So why was her heart galloping in her chest?

She shook it off and returned to her office.

Nothing. Had. Happened.

Except for some intense eye contact and plans to meet each other in formalwear in a few days.

But that was nothing!

She planted her elbows on her desk, closed her eyes, and caught her forehead with her hands.
