“I do hate you.”

“I know.” André waved a hand because he wasn’t done. “But I love her and I’m going to marry her.”

Asa sighed heavy and deep like the very idea was killing him. “Fine. What do you want from me?”

André grinned. “I need help picking the ring. And who better than her best friend?”

Asa tried to hate the suggestion. André could see it on his face as his irritation with André warred with the realization that it was an excellent idea.

“Fine.” But he said it like he hated the very word.

“Great. Finish your food. I have an appointment for us in a half an hour.”

“What? Today?” Asa asked, shocked.

“Yes.” André nodded.

Asa finally started to eat his tacos.

* * *

André had already picked out three options before showing up with Asa. He didn’t tell Asa that of course and was, again, very happy to be right.

But it was the square-cut pink diamond with a black diamond halo that they both kept going back to.

“It’s small,” André said.

“So is she,” Asa murmured.

“I can afford something bigger,” André pointed out.

“She’s not that kind of person.”

No, she wasn’t.

None of the other options they had considered were very large either.

But this one was simple and almost classic, with just enough badass to it to be beautiful.

“That’s the one,” André said.

Asa nodded. “Yep.”

The clerk ran his card and packaged up the ring.

“So when will this all take place? Did you have a ring last time?” Asa asked.

“I did have a ring. I still have it. Somewhere.” André took the bag from the clerk, smiled his thanks. Asa followed him out of the store.

The chill of the October wind bit at his ears as he zipped his coat up.

“But I didn’t want to propose with that. I wanted something new. Neither one of us is who we used to be.”

They went north on Michigan Avenue toward the Water Tower Garage where André had parked.

“By that logic you should be buying her a new ring every few years,” Asa pointed out.

“Maybe I will,” André said, shooting the other man a grin.
