He would never not show up.

Not again.

Never again.

The parking lot was full when he arrived, and he had to park in the street. He grabbed the rose and sprinted to the back of the building.

Pulling open the door, he raced down the hall to the lounge he’d built for her. It was full of people.

He heard his name come from a variety of directions but he only had one focus.

Nikki.

No one mattered but her.

He spotted her across the room. She was wearing an electric-blue dress that dipped in a deep V in the front and back. It hugged every curve of her body and was scandalously short.

And her shoes… Nikki and her fucking shoes.

Hot-pink, pencil-thin heels that looked like butterflies but with spikes on them.

She turned, spotted him, and smiled.

She smiled.

At him.

He took a breath for the first time in what felt like hours.

Every step her direction felt like climbing a mountain and she was the sunrise.

“I’m sorry I’m late,” he said. “But I’m here now.”

Her blue eyes, made more intense by the dress, took in his state and he could only imagine what she saw.

The next minute happened in slow motion.

She leaned in, a hand to his chest, and pressed a kiss to his cheek where she paused and said in his ear, “Sabine told me who’s in town. Is everything all right?” Her voice soft. Concerned. Full of care.

He nodded and found her eyes, needing to anchor himself. Needing her to see the sincerity in his apology. Needing her to believe him.

“Nik,” he said, his heart clenched in a fist. “I’m sorry. Please don’t think this was something that it wasn’t. I will never not show up for you.”

Her expression softened and she tapped her finger on his chest. “I know. You’ve proven that to me again and again. I knew you’d be here. Even if it took you a few extra minutes.”

He stared at her. Completely stunned.

She looked him over, a playful smile on those gorgeous lips. She took hold of his suspenders and gave them a little tug.

“Are these new? I like them.” She beamed up at him, no anger, no disbelief.

It was already over. Like it hadn’t even happened.

He didn’t deserve her.

He knew that, of course, but it was so obvious in that moment.

“I love you,” he said, wrapping his arms around her and crushing her lips with his own.
