Her artist was happy.

And honestly, that was the best thing she could have hoped for.

“We did it,” Zara said with a satisfied smile.

“How are you so calm about all of this?” Nikki asked.

Zara shrugged, her dark hair sliding over her shoulders like water. “I’ve been doing this since I was sixteen. I think this is the fourth time I’ve reinvented myself.” She eyed Nikki with calm assurance. “I am prouder of this record than any I’ve ever done. And that’s thanks to you.”

“How?” Nikki scoffed.

Zara flashed a smile. “Our hearts recognize one another. We’re meant to be, babe.”

Oh, please let that be true.

Zara arched an elegant black eyebrow. “This won’t be our last album together. I hope you know that.”

Nikki shook her head, but she was smiling.

“Who knew a drunken phone call would lead to all this?” she joked.

Zara pursed her lips and narrowed one eye. Nikki knew that look. It was an idea forming.

“Can we enjoy this one for like five minutes?” Nikki asked.

Zara was nodding her head and backing away. “I just have to write something down.”

Nikki checked her phone again.

It was half past six and she hadn’t heard from André.

Hopefully he was okay. It had been raining pretty heavily last time she’d looked outside.

Hannah came over and offered her congratulations, which was surreal considering who she actually was.

Johnny made a small speech about being proud of Nikki and not being surprised at all that the record had turned out so well.

But André still wasn’t there.

Nikki ducked into the hallway and tried to call him.

No answer.

The back door opened, and Sunshine and Sabine came in.

“Is it still raining?” she asked them.

“Not as much,” Sunshine replied. “Sorry we’re late. It was my fault.”

Sabine slipped her hand into Sunshine’s, and she asked, “Is André here?”

Nikki started to shake her head, and Sabine’s expression shifted almost imperceptibly.

“What?” Nikki asked. “Is something wrong?”

Sabine glanced between Sunshine and Nikki. “It’s probably nothing.”

Nikki didn’t move. Because Sabine clearly knew something she wasn’t saying.
