And then he’d beg her to come back.

And she’d smile and say, “Who are you?”

THAT HAD BEEN THE PLAN.

But no.

She wasn’t that fortunate.

Instead, he hadn’t seen her at all before he’d hit her with his car.

And now he was standing in her living room, in her safe space, while she was covered in pavement, her hair doing that thing where it curled at her temple but only on one side. Her feet were dirty and her dress was in tatters.

She looked like My Little Pony roadkill.

And André…

He looked how he always looked.

Handsome. Put together. His dark brown hair just a touch too long on top but still flawless.

His white dress shirt was tucked into his slacks with nary a wrinkle.

And did she mention the suspenders?

André didn’t wear belts.

He woresuspenders.Different colors and threading and loops and clips and some with leather and some without. He collected suspenders the way some people collected shoes. He had a different pair for every outfit, for every event.

Why did he look so hot with suspenders?

It was stupid.

“Why are you here?” Asa asked, interrupting her thoughts.

“I, um. Hi, Asa.” André clenched his fists at his sides and took a step closer to Nikki, his eyes never leaving her face.

Asa intercepted. “What. Are. You. Doing. Here?” Asa repeated slowly.

André finally looked at Asa. Really looked at him. And he sucked in a breath like he realized where he was.

“I wanted to be sure she was okay. The hospital wouldn’t give me any information.”

Asa scratched his cheek and planted both hands on his hips. He pivoted to look down at Nikki. “Hospital?”

“She was in a car accident.” Ryan decided to enter the conversation.

Asa threw his hands out to the side. “What is even happening?”

Nikki opened her mouth to speak but André got there first.

“I was at the studio for an appointment—”

She narrowed her eyes at him.

Appointment, huh?

He swallowed. “And I accidentally—”
