Muffin chuckled. “I guess you haven’t heard about me.”

“I’m sorry,” Nelle managed to say.

“No need to be,” Muffin said. “Brought you something to eat. Heard you were hard at work saving Virus’s life.”

Nelle nodded.

“Thanks, brother,” Slade said. “I’ll meet you out in the hallway. I have to talk to Virus.”

“You got it,” Muffin said. He pointed at Nelle. “You need anything, you let me know. Or tell Maggie to get me. Got that?”

Nelle nodded. Muffin exited the room. Slade brought the tray of food to the bed.

“Homemade pizza,” Slade said. “Fresh salad. And a beer.”

“Is that guy…”

“Yeah. He’s part of the club. He’s fully patched in. He’s a full member. He’s a fucking great chef though. And a baker. Whatever you want to call him, he’s a legend in the kitchen. And yet at the same time, if he needs to break someone’s neck, he can do that too.”

That made Nelle swallow hard.

“Muffin,” she whispered.

“Yeah,” Slade said. “I’ll be back in a little bit. I’m going to lock the door. I have a key.”

“That doesn’t make me feel safe.”

“If you don’t feel safe here, sweetheart, then leave again. See how that works out for you.”

Slade touched Nelle’s chin as he said that. She simply just stared at Slade in total disbelief. Slade turned away from Nelle and left her in his bed with something to eat and drink.

Out in the hallway Muffin waited with his arms folded, a smirk on his face.

“No comments needed, brother,” Slade said.

“I didn’t say a word,” Muffin said. “Not one fucking word at all.”

Muffin whistled. Slade gritted his teeth. They broke apart when Muffin turned to go behind the bar and into the kitchen. Slade kept walking and went to prayer.

Virus had since been propped up a little, holding one of the bottles of vodka with his left hand. He looked tired, drained…like he had almost been murdered.

“You done fucking the woman who saved me?” Virus growled.

Slade laughed. “You’re miserable.”

“I was shot up, brother.”

“That’s why we need you coherent for a little bit longer,” Cyrus said. “Who did this?”

Slade looked around the room. “Where’s Linc? Priest? The others?”

“Linc is out on a run with Priest to make sure this didn’t get back to anyone,” Cyrus said. “One more shooting in town, with one of our members, and we’re in big fucking trouble. What the fuck is going on around here?”

Cyrus looked not only tense, but worried and pissed the fuck off. Which everyone at the table was. And those who knew about the rat…

For a second Slade pondered the thought.

Virus.
