I throw the paper down, all thought of the article about the search for the I-90 killer lost, and jump up in panic. “What happened? Is she okay?” I demand, my voice shaking. Piglet never cries like this. “Mary,” I breathe, brushing back tendrils of hair trying to get a look at her face, but my little girl just clings to Lulu even harder.

“She scraped her knee,” Lulu explains, her pace not slowing.

“My flower!” Mary wails.

“It’s okay, baby, I’ll redo it. Mommy will fix it.”

My head rears back at the title. When the fuck didthat happen? Not that I’m mad, I wanted this, but I’m missing something. I don’t like that. Not one bit.

I’m going to kill someone right after I fix this.

I curve a hand around Lulu’s waist and rub Mary’s back with the other. I need to touch them, to know that they’re both here.

“Is anything broken?” I rush.

Lulu shakes her head, not speaking.

“Blood?”

She shakes her head again.

I breathe for the first time since I saw them. I’ll take tears over blood and broken bones any day when it comes to these two.

I unlock the door quickly, then reach out and steady Lulu with a hand on her elbow as she takes my daughter inside.

Our daughter.

Mary’s cries have calmed, but she still clings to Lulu, refusing to release her when she’s set on the bathroom vanity in our en suite.

“I love you so much, Piglet. You’re such a good girl. Daddy’s going to clean your hands while we have a cuddle,” Lulu tells her.

I move around the room, gathering the first-aid kit. “Can I see, baby?”

I have to nudge the back of her hand, but she releases her grip on Lulu’s jacket, one hand at a time, for me to clean with an antiseptic wipe. Softly, I cover the irritated skin with antibiotic cream just to be safe.Once done, I place a gentle kiss on each palm and declare them fixed. “All better,” I whisper.

What happened? The words are on the tip of my tongue, but now is not the time to ask.

Lulu carries our girl to the bed. “Can you grab her some pajamas? There should be some in the pile from earlier in the corner. I didn’t put them in her room yet.” She ends on a mutter.

I gather the clothes and press a kiss on each of their heads.

Mary is almost completely calm now, but Lulu is still shaking. My baby’s chin wobbles when she steps out of her overalls.

“They’ll be just like new when I’ve finished with them,” Lulu swears.

“Promise?” Mary whispers.

“With my whole heart.”

I feel like a loose part. What the fuck happened?

“How about we putBabeon?” I ask, already heading for the TV. My girls are snuggled on the bed.

I picked right. Lulu is exactly what we both need.

A loud banging carries through the RV. It sounds like a sledgehammer on the front door. The rage coiling in my stomach starts to unleash. Finally, something I can do.

“Stay in here, and enjoy your film.” I smile.
