“I understand,” she repeats. I feel her words more than I hear them.

Fuck, I need to make her fully mine. One day, I’ll be able to leave without worrying that she’ll run off.I can’t fucking wait.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Ajax

I have us packed up and ready to go in record time. The cold air helps cool me as I disconnect us from the site facilities. We’ll need to fill our water tanks for the road trip ahead.

Having planned to be here for another week or so, I’m not prepared for a long-distance drive.

Who knows where we’re headed? Who cares, as long as it’s far from Cromwell? Lulu will settle quicker if she’s away from people she knows.

She will,I reassure myself.

They’re both exactly where I left them when I re-enter the RV.

Perfect.

Walking over, I bend and kiss Lulu. “You did good,” I praise.

Her smile is small, but she can’t hide her body’s reaction to my words. Her breath hitches, and her nipples bead. Punishment and reward are exactly what Lulu needs, and she craves them. And so do I.

“You ladies staying here while I drive?”

Mary nods, her eyes drooping. I smile, watching her for a second.

“When she drops off, feel free to find something else,” I say, handing Lulu the remotes. “We need to fill up on gas, water, and a few food items, and then we’re out of here.”

“Can I call my friends?” Lulu whispers, ducking her head.

I tuck a finger under her chin to connect our gaze. “No.”

She blinks quickly, sucking her bottom lip into her mouth. “Will I ever come back?”

“No.”

A tear falls free, and I fight against the instinct to wipe it away. Instead, I watch as it rolls down her reddened cheek, dripping off her chin.

“You don’t have anything to come back to. Your family’s right here.” I nod to Mary, then tilt Lulu’s head back, making it easier to connect my lips to hers. “I’m going to give you a good life. How we get there is your choice, Lulu.”

She blinks more at my words. “And if I said I don’t want this?”

“I’d be very offended,” I frown, my voice deepening. “Let her sleep,” I order and walk away.

Time to get my family out of here.

The queue to get into Duke’s is massive. Sheriff McCallister was right; everyone is leaving tonight. I roll my eyes and pull forward, finally being able to enter the parking lot. The old man Duke approaches quickly, and I lower my window.

“You headed out of town?”

“Yes, sir,” I answer.

“Your little one asleep for the night?”

“Yeah.” I nod. I’m not worried about him seeing Lulu. You can’t see in the back with the curtains closed.

“Wait for the car at the front pump to move and then pull up to pump two. I’ll fill you up and sort payment for you, save you getting out.”
