He’s a killer!

He saved me!

What the fuck am I going to do?

Another cold breeze swipes through the trees again, biting painfully at my skin. Shivering, I make a decision, for now at least.

Raising my shoulder, I wipe my nose and cheek on it. With one last sniffle, I start walking home again. Ajax nods, a pleased smile creeping across his mouth as he leads me back, walking a little closer than before.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Ajax

The house is dark, just as I left it. Reaching into my pocket, I take out the back door key. I couldn’t risk anyone finding my earlier prey.

Lulu stops beside me. Shifting uncomfortably, she pushes to her tiptoes and peers inside the house, probably wondering where her mom is.

I smirk. I was going to tell her that her mother had been punished, but if the fear of being rejected by her mom keeps Lulu compliant, then the death of the woman upstairs can stay my little secret.

“Settle,” I order.

Her feet drop flat on the ground. My eyes roam over her again. Although still gorgeous, my girl is turning a concerning blue. It’s time to warm her up.

I raise a finger to my lips. “You’re going to bequiet. We’re going to creep upstairs, where you will do as you’re told. I’d hate to wake your mother.” What she doesn’t know . . .

Lulu’s eyes bulge. Her hair flails as she nods quickly.

Unlocking the door, I gesture for her to go in.

Keeping her bound, I lead. If it dawns on her that I know my way around, she doesn’t say anything. Instead, she continues to be the obedient woman I need and remains silent as ordered.

Once in her room, I close the door behind us. Lulu’s eyes flicker to the wall between her bedroom and her parents.

Stepping close, I keep my voice low. “Do you have a bag?”

Her tied hands point at the small wardrobe. A case sits on the top shelf. I point at the bed, and Lulu plants herself on the edge, hissing as the handmade quilt presses against her tender skin.

I don’t release the rope, not even as I pull down the case and a duffel bag from beside it.

Looking around the small room, I’m happy that we should fit most of her things in here.

Trapping the rope between my thumb and palm, I lift my forearm, looping the rope under my elbow as I walk closer to her.

It’s now or never.

I need Lulu to pack her things before I go take care of cleaning up our problems. They’re going to be found. I want them to be found. Just not before I getrid of any DNA, along with any evidence that Lulu was still here.

Her stepfather was aggressive in front of everyone yesterday, so the local sheriff’s office should have no problem believing my girl ran away.

All of the excess rope is rolled around my arm, and Lulu raises her hands, her face hopeful. I chuckle as I untie her.

“In a second, you will pack anything sentimental, along with the majority of your clothing. Start with your favorite items, please,” I add as a gesture.

Lulu worries her bottom lip.

“Say it,” I encourage.

She hesitates but finally whispers, “I can’t go with you, Ajax. My life is here. I have to stay. Everyone will be looking for Andrew. I’ll leave you out of it,” she rushes. “I won’t tell them it was you. I’ll say you wore a mask. I’ll say it was the Halloween killer.” Lulu nods. Oblivious to my furious face, she repeats, “I’ll say it was him.”
