My cheeks flame. “No, I don’t think I can.” I stress the last word, hoping he will catch on.

He doesn’t.

“Princess, I am out of patience. Go get in the bath.”

“I can’t.” Great, now I’m snapping. “I don’t think I can step in and out of the tub,” I mutter, embarrassed.

“Oh.”

Kaleb looks back and forth between us, having caught the end of our conversation. “I could . . .” He stops short at the noise that rips out of Michael. “I’ll go get Mom,” Kaleb hurries, practically sprinting from the room before I can even protest.

“And drop the fucking nickname,” Michael hisses to his passing brother.

CHAPTER TEN

Michael

Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath. My patience is slipping, and I’m not used to that feeling.

Can I spank her and not fuck her after? No.

“You’re being rude,” my girl snaps, tearing me from my thoughts.

Sitting on the edge of my bed with her arms folded and lips pouted, she is the epitome of sexy. My cock twitches as the need to be with her grows every second.

Her brow lifts on one side, and her sweet face swamps with disappointment. She’s upset on Kaleb’s behalf. Lara defending him rubs me the wrong way. I want her close with my family, but I want to take first place.

Kaleb’s eyes are on someone else. It’s Lara’s attentionthat concerns me. Dropping my eyes, I drink her in. Slightly disheveled from being carried, her robe has slipped on her left shoulder, the edge of her cream top visible.

It probably matches her pants. Cute and practical, nothing overly sexy, so why is my cock leaking at the thought of her taking off that duck-covered gown?

Bringing my gaze back up, I catch her wandering eye. Lara bites the corner of her lips as her eyes drop lower on my body. My chest rises and falls rapidly at the thought of her gaze being replaced with her hands.

The thought is exciting, erotic, and completely fucking new.

I worried for nothing; Lara craves me just as much as I crave her.

I lean against the doorframe and relax slightly for the first time since we returned from the college campus. “Is that so?” I smirk.

“Yes.” She nods. “Kaleb is just trying to help. You should be nicer.”

“I should,” I agree. “But I won’t.”

Her lips thin at my reply, and her eyes narrow.

“You know, if you’re jealous, then maybe you should have carried me in,” she challenges. I grimace but give a small nod because it’s not her fault she doesn’t know.

Kaleb’s words about being honest and accepted tickle the back of my mind, and my mouth opens on its own.

Could she love me the way I am?

No one will love you the way we do, Michael.Words of the past attack me, causing my stomach to drop and take all playfulness with it. They bother me now more than ever. Back then, our biological mother’s words as she handed me over to a social worker hadn’t meant much. After all, my brother was willing to die for me. I didn’t need anyone else.

But I’m not a child anymore. At twenty-seven, Daniel’s love isn’t all I need.

Closing my mouth, I stay quiet. My eyes roam over her form as she leans back.

Her bottom lip pouts out when I don’t respond.
