It was a thought, anyway.

The woman was insanely hot, loving to our kids, and now that I knew what an amazing musician she was, I truly didn’t want her to leave anytime soon. Most definitely not in less than two weeks.

“You’re right about that. Since I’ve been hanging out at Dirty Coyote, I’ve found that a few of those bartenders are great listeners. One has been my sounding board on more than one occasion.”

“Let me guess… Tammy?”

She nodded and smiled. “Has she always been like that?”

“For as long as I’ve known her, yes.”

We moved into the living room, me in a chair, and her on the sofa, with her legs pulled up under her. Bare feet visible, with sparkly nail polish on those suckable toes of hers.

“And how long is that?”

“About ten years. She used to help out with the kids when they were babies.”

“So, what about the kids? Can I ask more about them?”

I shook my head, then sipped my wine. “Not until you tell me why you haven’t played in a while.”

“Deal,” she said, then took a long breath and began, “You know how I have a big family, and I’m the oldest.”

“Yep. Learned that during your interview.”

“Well, my parents own one of the biggest veterinarian clinics in all of Nashville, and of course, being the oldest, I was supposed to take it over when they retire.”

“But aren’t you allergic to dogs?”

“I am now, but I wasn’t growing up. It’s weird, I have no idea how it happened, but now, except for Lucy and a few other breeds, I can’t be around dogs.”

“What does that have to do with you playing the violin?”

“When I started college, I realized I couldn’t do both and succeed at either one, so I purposely turned my back on my music to give all my attention to becoming a vet.”

I knew that either-or kind of decision making. I’d been in that state when Hank’s mom up and walked out.

“I’m no psychologist, but I think your dog allergy might have something to do with abandoning your music. Your soul, which is where your music lives, is sabotaging you on purpose.”

She softly chuckled, and her breasts swayed. I was quickly falling for this woman. Not only was she beautiful to look at, but I could tell she had one of those hearts that once she took you in, there was no letting go, which would explain the dog allergy. Her heart didn’t want to disappoint her parents, so instead, her mind did it for her.

“That’s so far out there.”

“Might be. Still, I can’t help thinking I’m right. Is that why you ended up with a degree in communications instead?”

“Yes. I figured if I couldn’t take over my parents’ business that way, I’d help by handling their advertising. My younger brother is now headed for vet school. I’ve got my own path to walk, and I think it’s more in the promotion end of things. At least I can make a living at that.”

“Why not in music? The way you play, you could probably get in with a symphony tomorrow.”

She grinned, as if I didn’t know what I was talking about. She might as well have rolled her pretty eyes.

“You know how hard anything like that is. I mean, you guys are just lucky. Making a living with your music is like climbing Mt. Everest. No matter how good you are, the obstacles are monumental. I just broke up with a guitar player who barely scrapes by. He solved that monetary problem with porn.”

I almost choked on my wine.

“Did you say porn?”

“That’s complicated as well. The short version is he’s now making porn videos.”
