I chose to let it go… for now. “Kids are fine. I’m here bearing thank you gifts.” I held up the bottle of wine and some flowers. I knew it was one of her favorites, Voga Pino Gregio, from what Tammy had told Austin about her. We did our homework before I was sent in to the lioness’ den.

“What’s this all about?” she asked, grinning, but still defensive with the door.

“For bringing music to our kids and for managing to get through the first four days without quitting.”

Her smile grew warmer on her lovely lips. “It’s been fun.”

“Easy for you to say. Most nannies are already pulling their hair out.”

“I like my hair. Besides, the kids are great. You just have to keep them entertained.”

“A concept most nannies don’t understand. Anyway…” I held the bottle of wine higher. She would either invite me in or take the bottle and say good night. I hoped like hell for the latter.

She finally grabbed the bottle and said, “Why don’t you come in? But only for one glass. I’m tired, and the kids are going to be raring to go early in the morning. More music lessons, I’m sure.”

“One drink,” I told her, hesitating in the doorway, even after she opened the door for my entrance. “You have my word.”

“And just what is your word worth?”

“That depends on the circumstances.”

“Ah, I’ll remember that when you go for that second glass.”

“Go easy on me. It’s been a long day.”

“For me too. You probably heard how awful I sound when you walked up to the door.”

I stepped inside, and she closed the door behind me.

“You sound amazing,” I told her. “Nothing awful about it.”

“Thanks, but I can’t agree,” she said, dismissing my compliment and walking towards the kitchen. “I’m so rusty, I can’t even remember half of the music I knew by heart. And forget about anything country. That’s impossible.”

As I followed her, I couldn’t help but notice how her round hips swayed with each step, and how her long, blond hair tumbled down her back, nearly reaching her waist. She wore black tights with different-sized bright-red hearts dancing across her legs, and an oversized bright-red t-shirt that left nothing to the imagination.

“You’re being too hard on yourself. I think you sounded amazing,” I told her as she pulled two wine glasses down from the open shelves. Once she placed them on the table, she handed me the wine opener. Then she pulled a glass vase out of a cupboard, added water, and gave the flowers I’d brought a home.

“I’d open the wine, but I know you can do it faster,” she said, as she stood on the other side of the small island. “The provided opener isn’t what I’m used to. By the way, what you heard is nothing like how I used to play.”

“If I’m going to be honest, your music brought me to tears.”

I had no idea why I told her that. Usually, I kept that kind of stuff to myself, but in this case, I felt as though she needed to hear the truth.

I could see the slight blush on her face. “Well… um… thank you, but I couldn’t even come close to that country riff.”

“Very few fiddle players can play that song. Give yourself time, and I’m sure you’ll master it. Talent like yours can play anything. Why’d you stopped playing?” I opened the wine and gave us both a generous pour.

“It’s complicated.”

I could tell she didn’t want to talk about it, but I wasn’t ready to let the subject die.

“Most things are. If they were easy, we’d always do whatever we wanted, and very few folks get to do that.”

“We barely know each other. Why should I bore you with my sad little story?”

“Because I asked, and sometimes strangers make the best listeners.”

She grinned, and I wanted to kiss her. I knew that something happened between her and Kasey. He didn’t go into the details, but I knew they’d had sex. Aside from Jenna, who stayed loyal to Austin, and he to her, if the woman one of us was dating was okay with it, we sometimes shared. We didn’t have a problem with it, and as long as the woman was good with a polyamorous relationship, we were perfectly willing to share her. We hadn’t had anything lasting hit our world yet, but there was something about Liberty and the way she handled the kids that made me wonder if she wasn’t different. If she might stick around longer and might like three lovers.
