She held up a sleeve of crackers. “Look what I found.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Do you think that’ll be enough for you?”

“It’ll suffice.”

When the soup was done, they sat at the table and Jade raised her bottle of beer. “To moving on.”

“To better things.”

They both took a drink, then Jade crumbled some crackers into her soup. “What did Keith say when you told him?”

“Um…I haven’t called him yet.”

She looked at him. “What? Why not?”

“I want to be out of here first. I don’t want him showing up and trying to guilt me into staying.”

She cocked her head. “Would he be able to?”

“No. I just don’t want to deal with it.”

She smiled. “You know you could take him, right?”

“I’ve been tempted a few times.”

When they finished eating, Jade washed the few dishes while Sawyer started packing the kitchen. He’d bring all of his dishes and pots and pans, because most of what was in the loft was J.T.’s. His brother hadn’t asked for it back, but it’d be nice to have his own things. Even as meager and unimpressive as they were.

He filled two boxes, then set them by the door. Since Jade had done such a thorough cleaning job when she first arrived, there wasn’t a lot left to do. She wiped down the counters and cleaned the refrigerator. They’d mop the floor before they left.

She stood in the kitchen entryway. “Looks pretty good.”

“Like I said after your boredom clean. It’s better than when I moved in.”

They went to the living room next and Sawyer taped a few more boxes together. “Let’s do some packing in here, then take a walk to the corner store for beer and junk food.”

“On one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“You get one thing to eat that isn’t good for you.”

He folded his arms across his chest. “You’re going to force me to eat something unhealthy?”

“Yes. You’ll work it off carrying the boxes down the stairs.”

“Fine. One thing.”

“There must be something you crave once in a while.”

He shook his head. “Not really. Once you get past the initial phase of cutting something from your diet, you don’t want it anymore.”

“Hmm. So what are you going to get?”

“I’ll decide when I get there. Let’s get to work.”

She looked at the bookshelf. “All the books and movies?”

“Yes. But don’t put all the books in one box.”
