“Are you afraid it’ll be too heavy for you? Is that even possible?”

“No. I don’t want the bottom to fall out of the box halfway down the stairs. Divide them between two boxes.”

She started taking books from the shelf, looking at each one and reading the back cover.

Sawyer frowned at her. “We’ll never get done if you check out every book on the shelf.”

“Sorry. You have some interesting books here.”

“Well, you can check them out when they’re unpacked in the loft.”

“Fine.”

Sawyer went to the small desk to empty the drawers. He’d never actually sat down at the desk and used it. But somehow he’d managed to fill the drawers with a lot of miscellaneous stuff. He started going through it, then gave up and pulled the drawers out and emptied them into his box.

Jade looked at him. “That’s one way to do it.”

“I don’t like packing.”

“How do you feel about unpacking?”

“It’s slightly better.” He dumped all the drawers into one box, then sealed it and put it with the others by the door. He then went and stood behind Jade.

She was sitting on the floor and she looked up at him. “Did you want to do this yourself?”

“No.” He went to the couch and sat with a scowl.

Jade got up and walked over to him, then sat beside him. “What’s going on?”

“I thought this would be no big deal.”

She took his hand. “You lived here for five years. It’s a big change.”

He blew out a breath. “It’s not that I don’t want to leave it. I do.”

“You’re going to miss it. That’s understandable.”

“Let’s go take that walk.”

“Okay. I think beer and junk food will fix you right up.”

They put on their coats and left the apartment. When Sawyer didn’t lock the door, she looked at him.

He shrugged. “If we’re lucky, someone will come in while we’re gone and clean the place out.”

They left the apartment building and headed down the street. It was cool, but nothing compared to their walk through the snow. Jade put her arm through Sawyers and they walked along the sidewalk in a comfortable silence. There was no doubt about it. Jade made everything a little bit easier.

When they entered the store, Denise gave Sawyer a smile. “You look better.”

“Oh, yeah. Good as new.”

“Until your next fight?”

He went to the counter while Jade went in search of snacks. “There’s not going to be any more fights. I’m retiring.”

“Wow. That’s a surprise. I thought you were pretty good?”

He smiled. “I am. I decided I didn’t want to go pro. I’m just back in town to clean out my apartment.”
