She sighed, then took a bite of her Danish. When she finished chewing, she looked at him. “Fine.”

“Just fine?”

She smiled. “More than fine.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Sage took a sip of coffee. “Sorry guys, but I’mwaytoo busy to go. Thanks for inviting me, though.”

Sawyer squinted at her. “I figured you be too busy.”

“Yeah. I’m sure.”

Jade looked at her. “You can come if you want.”

Sawyer grunted. “No. She just said she waswaytoo busy.”

Sage shook her head. “I didn’t want to spend the day with you, anyway.” She looked at Jade. “Him, not you.”

Jade smiled. “Maybe you and I should go for a trail ride.”

Sawyer scowled. “Hey. It was my idea.”

Sage got up to refill her coffee cup. “It’s fine. I’m going to go help Joey today, anyway.”

Sawyer held up his cup for her to fill and she ignored it and sat down in her chair. She looked at Jade. “You should come to the inn after your ride. Joey’s going to have a full house this weekend and she’s freaking out a little.”

Sawyer got up to get some more coffee. “If you’d rather do that…”

“No. I want to go for a ride. Then I’ll go see Joey.”

He sat back down. “Good. Because I really want to get you on a horse again.”

An hour later, they were walking their horses across the meadow. It was a beautiful day, and Jade was very glad Sawyer had gotten her out of the house. He was right. She’d been hiding out since their freezing walk through the snow. But this was nice. She glanced at Sawyer. He looked damn good sitting a horse. He’d fought being a cowboy for so long, but he was a natural. It was in his blood.

He looked at her. “What?”

“Nothing. I’m just enjoying the ride. Thank you for suggesting it.”

“You’re doing pretty good, considering you haven’t been on a horse in a while.”

“I think once you know how, it doesn’t really go away.”

“Do you want to pick up the pace a little?”

“Um…” She urged her horse into a run and took off. A moment later, Sawyer caught up to her.

“I should’ve seen that coming.” They loped across the field, then slowed down when they came to the creek. “Do you want to cross over or follow it for a while?”

“Let’s follow the creek to the swimming hole.”

“Do you want to go swimming?”

“No. It’s fifty degrees out and the creek is God knows how cold. I just want to see it again. We spent a lot of time there in the summer. We’d ride out here, get all hot, then jump into the water, which is cold even in the middle of summer.”

“Those were the days.”

“Thank you Sawyer.”
