Jade looked at him. “What were you going to say?”
“I was going to say men and women can’t be friends.”
“And you stopped yourself because?”
“That would be a hypocritical thing for me to say.”
“And why don’t you think men and women can be friends?”
“Because of the conversation we had earlier. There’s always the question of ‘what if’ hanging over the relationship.”
“It wasn’t a problem when we were kids.”
“Of course not. We were kids.”
“But it’s a problem now?”
He shook his head. “That’s not what I’m saying.”
She put a hand on his arm. “Did I screw things up by bringing that up earlier?”
He looked at her. “No. I’ll back off on the whole Xander thing.”
“Thank you.”
Sage returned to the room with a smile as she tucked her phone in her pocket. “He was checking to make sure I was okay. He thought I was alone at my house.”
Sawyer cleared his throat. “That was nice of him.”
Sage shook her head. “You just can’t let me enjoy his company, can you?”
“I’m trying.” She raised an eyebrow, and he added, “I’ll try harder.”
“Thank you.”
Jake came into the kitchen. “I’m going to fix a tray and take it upstairs.”
Sage went to the stove. “I’ll get it Dad. Is Ember okay?”
“I think so. She’s feeling a little off. I’ll get her to eat, then maybe she can get some rest.”
“You stay with her. We’ve got everything here. Jade and I fed the horses and the other animals. We gave the outside guys fresh water. Everyone is happy until dinner.”
“Thank you, honey.” He took a beer from the refrigerator and looked at Sawyer. “You’re okay to take the plow to J.T. after lunch?”
“Yeah. Jade’s coming with me.”
He nodded. “Thanks. If you run into any trouble, give me a call.”
“We’ll be fine, Dad.”
Jake set his beer on the tray Sage fixed and left the kitchen.
Sage sat at the table. “He seems worried.”
Jade nodded. “He’s got an extremely pregnant wife and a blizzard outside. Of course he’s worried.”
Sawyer looked at Sage. “Call me if anything happens.”
