She sat up. “You must be wet.”

“Not too bad. I’m fine.”

She stood and went to him. “Your hair is wet.” She bent and felt his pants. “And so are your pants. You’ll never get warm like that. I’m going to get you a towel for your hair.”

“Jade, I’m fine.”

She ignored him and headed for the kitchen, then returned a few moments later with a towel she must’ve found in the laundry room. She started drying his hair with it, and he looked up at her.

“I could probably do that myself.”

She sighed and handed him the towel. “Do you have anything under your pants?”

“Excuse me?”

“Long johns?”

“Yes.”

“Then you should take off your pants and let them dry.”

He looked up at her. “Are you sure you can handle that?”

“You in long johns? I’ll try to control myself.”

Sawyer grinned, then got to his feet and removed his wet jeans. She took them from him and laid them over a chair to dry out.

“The bottom of your long johns are probably wet too, but let’s leave those on.”

“I agree.” He sat back down on the cushion, and she returned to the couch.

“Are you going to sit there the rest of the night?”

“No.” He moved to the couch and put the cushion on the floor next to it, then sat and leaned against the couch near her pillow. “Is this okay?”

“Yes. But you can have the couch. I can move to the chair.”

“I’m fine.”

She laid down. “Okay.” She was quiet for a moment, then asked, “Do you think the pond will freeze over?”

“Probably.”

“Thick enough to skate on?”

“I wouldn’t be surprised.”

“Will you skate with me?”

He turned his head and looked at her. “We weren’t very good the last time we ice skated.”

“We were also fifteen or something.”

“Hmm. Can we talk about it tomorrow?”

“Sure. Good night.”

“Night.”
