Sage looked at Jade. “One time I came in here with Granddad’s card. Now he checks the name every time.”

Xander handed the card back to her, and she signed the receipt. “Thank you for your good service, as always.”

“It’s my pleasure.” They headed for the door and he called out after them. “Be careful in the snow, Ranch Girl.”

She turned back to him. “You too.”

When they got outside, they stashed the box in the car, then they headed down the street to the grocery store.

Jade nudged her. “Wow. Why aren’t you all over that?”

Sage smiled. “It’s complicated.”

“He obviously likes you.”

Sage nodded. “We’re friends.”

“Hmm. I’m not buying that. The sexual tension was palpable. What’s holding you back?”

“Five kids.”

Jade looked at her. “What?”

“He has five kids. They’re not his own. He’s raising his brother’s kids.”

“Oh, crap.”

Sage sighed. “Yeah. It’s a bit of a roadblock. The fact he’s doing that makes him even more wonderful. But pretty much takes anything beyond friendship off the table.

“That’s a roadblock alright. But still. He’s really cute.”

“How’d you recognize him from so long ago?”

“His smile. Hard to forget that smile.”

Sage nodded. “Oh, yeah. I love his smile.”

Jade laughed. “I think you love him a little bit, too.”

Sage sighed again. “Can you love someone a little bit?”

“Definitely.”

Sage stopped walking and put a hand on Jade’s arm. “Do you love Sawyer a little bit?”

Jade looked away from her. “Um…I might.” She looked at Sage again. “But for now, I’m just glad to have him back in my life.”

Sage took her arm, and they started walking again. “I’m pretty sure he feels the same way.”

“The back in his life part? Or the loving me a little bit part?”

“Both.”

Jade took a deep breath. “That scares me a little bit.”

They went into the grocery store and Sage filled a basket with things for her house and Sawyer’s. She knew what he usually had in his cupboard. And he always welcomed fruit. They went to the produce department, and she was checking out the bananas when Brady came from the back room.

“Good morning, Sage.”
