He took a deep breath, then slowly moved into a sitting position. The move made both his head and his side hurt even worse. Which surprised him. He really didn’t think it was possible to hurt worse.

Jade heard him move, and she sat up in the chair. “Sawyer. What are you doing?”

“I need to pee.”

She stood. “Let me help you.”

He held up a hand. “I got it.” He took another breath, then got to his feet. The room spun, and suddenly Jade was next to him.

She took his arm. “No, you don’t.”

He let the room settle down, then he glanced at her. “Just help me to the bedroom door.” She helped him to his feet and he let his robe drop to the floor.

She took his arm, and they started walking, taking tiny shuffling steps, toward the bedroom door. Sawyer grinned. “At this rate, we’ll never get there.”

“It’s not a race.”

“Tell that to my bladder.” They reached the bedroom, and he stopped and held onto the doorframe. “Okay. I’m good.”

She let go of him. “I’ll be right here.”

He crossed the room to the bathroom and went inside. After relieving himself, he ventured a look in the mirror. “Shit.” The whole right side of his face was bruised and swollen, and his eye was completely closed. “Bastard. I hope you’re in as much pain as I am today.” He washed his hands, then put on a t-shirt that was hanging on the back of the door. He couldn’t remember why it was there, but it must still be relatively clean or he would’veput it in the hamper. But really it didn’t matter because he was in desperate need of a shower. He just wasn’t quite ready to tackle that. When he left the bathroom, he found Jade a few feet on the other side of the door.

“Keith said…if there’s…”

“It’s all good, Jade.” He looked at the bed. “I think I’d like to reclaim the bed. At least for a day or two.”

“Of course.” They went to the bed, and he laid down. “Can I get you anything? More pain pills?”

“I don’t generally take them after the first night. But yeah. I think I’ll make an exception. One more should do it.”

“Bourbon?”

“Water.”

“Can you eat?”

“No.” The thought of food made him nauseous.

She left the room, and he tried to get comfortable on the bed. It was better than the couch, but at this point, he wasn’t going to be able to get comfortable anywhere.

Jade returned with a glass of water and handed it and a pill to him.

He swallowed the pill, then smiled at her. “Don’t look so worried.”

“You got the hell beat out of you, Sawyer. Of course I’m worried.”

He held out the glass, and she took it from him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t really know what to expect. But this wasn’t it. Otherwise, I would’ve warned you. And given you a chance to take off before I got home.”

“I wouldn’t have taken off.”

“Are you wishing just a little bit you were in Vegas right now with Seth?”

She laughed. “No. I’ll take you beat to hell over Seth any day.”

“Thank you. I think.” He rubbed his forehead. “I think I have a concussion.”

Jade folded her arms across her chest. “Which means you need to see a doctor.”
