“Yep. She got herself a fancy job in a fancy resort in Hawaii. Assistant manager. It’s right on the fancy damn beach.”

“Shit.”

“Yep. That pretty well sums it up. Shit, shit, and more shit.” He took a sip of beer.

“I didn’t know she was searching for a job…elsewhere.”

Sawyer looked around the bar. “Well, yeah. Not when she has a job in a classy place like this.”

“Did you know she was looking for a job?”

He shook his head. “She talked about it in Missoula. When she first showed up at my door. But since we’ve been here. I thought she’d kind of forgotten about it. I thought she was happy here.”

“With you.”

Sawyer scowled. “Yeah. I guess I’m an idiot.”

“You’re not an idiot. We all assumed she was here to stay, especially now that you’ve gotten past the best friend phase. It’s always been obvious to the rest of us that you two had feelings that went way beyond friendship. It just took you a while to figure it out.”

“Apparently, that’s not enough. At least for Jade.” Sawyer waved at Jenny, the cocktail waitress, and she walked over to their table. “Can we get two more shots of tequila, please?”

J.T. shook his head. “Just one.” Jenny nodded and left the table.

Sawyer scowled at J.T. “Are you flaking out on me already?”

“No. I don’t want to have to call Dad to come pick us up. You drink all you want. I’ll make sure you get home.”

Sawyer studied the beer label for a moment. “I don’t want her to go.”

“I figured. So what are you going to do about it?”

Sawyer drank some more beer. “Nothing.”

“That sounds like a great plan.”

“I don’t want her to stay here if her destiny is in Hawaii.”

“Her destiny?”

“Shit. Whatever.”

“If you want her to stay, just ask her to stay.”

Sawyer pointed at him. “See, that’s what Sage said. But I don’t want to get in the way of her…”

“Destiny?”

“Bingo.” Jenny returned with the shot and he smiled at her. “Bring me another in about fifteen minutes. And another beer.”

She looked at J.T. “How about for you, hon?”

“I’ll take a Coke next round, Jenny.” Jenny left, and J.T. leaned forward on the table. “That’s bullshit. Just tell her how you feel. The woman has been in love with you since middle school.”

“I still don’t believe that.”

“Trust me. She has. And since you two got together, it seems to be more about…spending quality time alone, then about building a relationship. Sex is great and all, but it can’t be the all there is.”

“We’ve known each other since we were in middle school. We already have a foundation. The sex is new and exciting.” He took a moment. “It’s really good.”
