“I don’t want to get into it.” She stood. “I think I’ll go take a drive. I need to think about some stuff.”

When she went out to her car, she remembered she’d need to drive past the barn and the house and she might run into Sawyer or Jake. She opted instead to take a walk in the meadow behind Sage’s house.

When Sawyer and Jake got back from their run, Sawyer realized he was quite hungry, not having eaten breakfast, then working out and taking the run.

He looked at Jake. “Can I raid your fridge? Mine’s a little sad right now.”

“No problem. Come on in. I’m hungry myself. How about an omelet?”

“Sounds wonderful.”

They found Ember in the kitchen trying to soothe a cranky Esty. Jake took the baby from her. “Let me try.” He gave it a fewminutes, without any luck, then turned to Sawyer. “Okay. Let’s see what you can do with this baby.”

Sawyer held up his hands. “Oh no.” He shook his head. “I don’t want to break her.”

“You’re not going to break her.” Jake put the baby into Sawyer’s arms. “Just hold tight. But not too tight. And make her feel secure.”

Sawyer frowned at Esty. “I don’t think she likes me. Seems to be a pattern today.”

Ember laughed. “Of course she likes you. You’re her big brother.”

Sawyer bounced the baby. “Is that right? Do you like your big brother?”

The baby stopped fussing and looked at him.

Ember smiled. “See.”

Sawyer stroked Esty’s hand. “You do like me. I like you too, little one. I can’t call you Little Sis, because that name is already taken. But I’ll come up with something.”

Esty blinked a couple of times and closed her eyes. Sawyer looked at Ember. “She’s falling asleep.”

Ember put a finger to her lips. “Just keep doing what you’re doing while I grab something to eat.”

Sawyer slowly lowered himself into one of the chairs. “Go for it. I think I’ve got this.”

Jake kissed Ember. “Go sit. I came in here to make Sawyer and me and omelet.”

“Sounds wonderful.” She went to the table and sat down. “It feels so weird sitting here not holding the baby.”

Sawyer smiled at her. “Pretty soon she’ll be running around and you’ll wish she’d sleep in your arms again.”

When Sage came through the back door, all three of them shushed her.

“What?”

Jake pointed at the baby asleep in Sawyer’s arms.

Sage shook her head. “I never thought I’d see the day.”

Ember laughed. “She was fussy until her big brother held her. Then she calmed right down and went to sleep.”

Sage went to look at the baby, but when she went to touch her, Sawyer turned away from her. “Stop. You’re going to wake her up.”

“Fine, Papa Bear. She’s my sister too, you know.”

Jake cleared his throat. “Are you hungry, sweetheart? I’m making omelets.”

“I’ll never say no to your omelets, Dad.”
