Carla came up to them. “Are you okay, honey?”

Jade nodded and Sawyer handed her his card. “Good thing you brought your own bodyguard with you.” Carla ran the card, then gave it back to him. “You two have a good night, now.”

“Thanks, Carla.”

Sawyer led her outside, then stopped and put his arms around her. “Bastard.”

She laid her head on his shoulder. “I should be able to handle guys like that. But it reminds me of my father. And…”

He kissed her forehead, then took her hand, and they started walking down the street. “Did you know him?”

“He was at the bar earlier. Drunk on a Sunday afternoon. I shut him down. And cut him off. He didn’t take it so well. Ricky threw him out.”

Sawyer was quiet for a few minutes. “Are you sure you don’t want to take Carla up on her offer?”

“I’m sure.”

“Maybe I should pick you up from work when you start working nights.”

“I’ll be fine, Sawyer. I don’t—”

“I know. You don’t want to be taken care of. But dammit. I worry about you.”

“How about we compromise? You can pick me up on Friday and Saturday nights.”

“Do you think the crazies only come out on the weekends?”

“Not all the time. But in my experience as a bartender, they’re more likely to show up on those nights.”

“Okay. Deal.”

“What do you say we walk off some of these wings, then go home to the loft and work off the rest of them?”

He took her arm and turned her around. “I say we walk to the truck and head home.”

“The truck is a block away.”

“I know. A block too far.”

Chapter thirty-four

"Always the diplomat."

Jade opened her eyes with a sigh of satisfaction, then sat up when she realized it was morning and she was still with Sawyer.

“Oh my gosh. I fell asleep.”

Sawyer reached for her. “You might as well lie back down and stay awhile.”

She pulled away from him and got out of bed. “I can’t. I need to go before someone sees me.”

Sawyer raised onto an elbow. “Jade. Chill out. It’s no big deal.”

“We had a plan, Sawyer.” She started picking her clothes up from the floor where’d she’d dropped them last night.

“Yeah, about that. I’m not so sure I’m totally onboard with the plan anymore. I’d really like to make some adjustments.”

She scowled at him. “I’m serious.”
