He laughed, turning around and closing the door. I gritted my teeth together. He was playing games with me and making me uncomfortable.

“If you come any closer to me, I’ll scream,” I told him.

“Don’t threaten me, little girl,” he hissed at me, stumbling again as he tried to take a step toward me. He ended up falling over instead, crumbling to the floor and bumping his head on my bedside table.

I used the opportunity to get away from him. It was hard to run in my heels, but I got out of there before he stopped groaning from the impact on his head.

I raced down the grand marble staircase and bumped into Annie when I looked over my shoulder to make sure Connor wasn’t following.

“There you are!” Annie shook my shoulders. “Have you seen Connor? Georgia asked me to-”

She finally seemed to realize the state I was in.

“Are you okay?” she asked, brows shooting up with concern. “You’re pale as a ghost.”

“Come o-on,” I stuttered, dragging her away by her arm.

I didn’t stop until we’d reached the wedding arch where my sister and Connor had just promised each other endless love and loyalty. Some people were already loading up the truck with the chairs and flowers used for the ceremony.

“Slow down,” Annie begged, trying to catch her breath. “What are you running away from, Violet?”

“Connor,” I exhaled. “He cornered me in my bedroom.”

“Why?” Annie knitted her brows in confusion.

“I have no idea, but he’s a creep,” I muttered, rubbing my temples. “Please, Annie, can we get out of here?”

“You know we can’t,” she said, nervously tucking a strand of hair behind her ear as she checked if anyone was watching us. “It’s your sister’s wedding. You know Georgia will freak if we’re not here.”

“I guess.”

I tied my perfectly curled hair into a low bun, unable to handle the heat that flashed over me in a wave of terror. Annie started fanning my face, the look of concern on her pretty face growing and growing.

“Did you have another panic attack?” she asked in a hushed tone.

“Yeah,” I waved dismissively. “I’m fine now. It was Connor. He scares me.”

“Did he hurt you?”

I shook my head. “I don’t think he’s brave enough to do that. He just gives me the creeps.”

“Do you want to tell someone he makes you uncomfortable?” Annie suggested. “Your dad, maybe?”

“No,” I shook my head again. “Definitely not. Keep this between us, Annie. But… has he ever been weird around you?”

“Weird how?”

“I don’t know.” I shuddered trying to think of examples. “Giving you weird looks, like he’s stripping you in his mind… Making you feel uncomfortable, like you’re naked before him?”

“No,” Annie shook her head vehemently, a far away look in her eyes. “He never did that to me. But I really think you should tell someone.”

“No,” I cut her off. “It stays between us.”

My heartbeat finally slowed down after Annie promised to keep quiet. She took me to the reception pavilion and got me something to drink. As I sipped on the orange juice, I thought about Connor again. His attention was unnerving and unwanted, but he didn’t seem to catch my discomfort at all.

Still, it wasn’t like he’d done something to me. He always behave appropriately when we were with my family. But now that I’d seen him alone and in action, I would have to make sure we weren’t alone again.

Lots of Daddy’s friends were like that, too. When Daddy wasn’t looking, they’d sneak in a hug where their hands would wander. But it was easy to tell Daddy about them. My sister’s husband… That was another thing. I couldn’t let down Georgia, either. As much as we’d grown apart, I still cared about her. I couldn’t ruin her marriage… least of all on her highly anticipated wedding day.
