Only two pieces of the puzzle remained to be explained. What was Arthur’s relationship with the New World Order? And did he report directly to Li?

“Our associates won’t like this.” Shaw perched his Beretta against my head. “Let me kill him, now, before it’s too late.”

“Yeah, let’s kill him.” Arthur’s eyes sparkled, greedy for my blood. “If he knows about NWO, he’s a dead man walking anyway.”

“Don’t kill him,” Thena begged. “If he dies, you’ll get nothing from me. Nothing!”

“To think you were such a nice, polite little princess when your daddy was around. Yet here you are, acting like a bitch in heat.” Arthur paused and considered Thena’s tears for a moment before he did an about face. “On the other hand, you’re not wrong. You’re much more likely to be helpful to me while he lives, and I still want his John Hancock on these papers.”

“Cut through the shit,” Shaw snapped. “Let’s get it done and over.”

“A sound recommendation from a fucking traitor.” I flashed my teeth. “I get you need these papers signed. I’ll sign them.”

Arthur widened his eyes. “You will?”

“If you let Thena go.” I glanced over my shoulder and visualized a plan that could work. “You don’t need her.”

“Oh, I need her all right.”

“Why?” she asked. “What do you want from me?”

“I need you to answer a question.” He flashed Thena the fucked-up smirk I wanted to wipe from his face. “Where are your sisters?”

Shit. I stole a glance at the clock. We had fifteen minutes to go. It was a lot of time to inflict pain and suffering on a captive or two.

“My sisters?” Thena cleared her throat. “They’re busy. Doing their thing.”

“Wrong answer.” Arthur scowled. “I know they haven’t been seen for a while. So, I’ll ask again. Where are they?”

“I don’t know,” she said.

“Wrong answer again.” He slammed his hand on the table, making Thena flinch. “Tell me where your sisters are, or your boyfriend is gonna pay the price.”

“Please, believe me.” She steeped her hands as in in prayer. “They left after Nix died. They’ve been gone for a long time. I don’t know where they are.”

He signaled.

The next hit bolted through me in a white flash of pain. It lasted longer than the others. The amperage felt higher, more potent, crippling. The stench of burning steak accompanied the hum of the agony that clenched me everywhere.

The crash of my body on the floor registered like a distant event. Odd sounds reached me. Fast, rhythmic thuds pummeled the wood as my back and heels bounced reflexively on the floor. My grunts and the compulsive grinding of teeth echoed inside my skull.

When the hit finally ended, I sucked in a breath and tried very hard to recoup command of my senses. The plan. You had a plan, Marine. Execute it.

Groaning, I rolled once, twice, three times, until I hit the wall. Slumping to one side, I knocked down the Chinese ceramic vase by the door. It tipped over and crashed with a racket. My cane clattered against the baseboard.

“Stop this!” Thena’s tearful plea galvanized Arthur and Shaw’s attention. “You’re killing him!”

“A little electricity will not kill him… yet.” Arthur mocked her. “Although, his heart could give up or he could sustain brain damage. The cerebral cortex is not configured to act like a junction box. Stuff gets jumbled in there. Some people are never the same.”

The sob that escaped Thena’s lips about killed me. Heaving and groaning, I slumped against the wall, still sizzling like an overcooked piece of meat.

“Stop terrorizing her,” I bit out through stiff lips.

“That’s precisely the point of this little get together, isn’t it?”
