“I am too...” Dylan admitted with a huge smile and looked at his father. “How are you holding up, grandpa?”

Daxon’s gorgeous smile lit up the room. “Splendid, son.”

There was a soft tap at the door, and a thin woman walked into the room. Daxon moved in closer to get out of the way, but retreated towards the door and leaned against the frame. He looked awkward and like he wanted to be anywhere other than here. I could imagine he wished to be in the arms of another woman and fucking her brains out to forget I ever existed. This turned his life upside down thanks to our never-ending attraction. I knew he wanted it to never happen, but the temptation was too much. It was out of our control and still was.

“Good afternoon. I’ll be your ultrasound technician today.” She said politely in a soft manner. “I assume this is all family here?”

“Yes, this is my fiancé and his father.” I answered with my anxiety over a notch.

“Okay, so father to be and grandpa to be. Nice to meet you both.” She said with a smile.

I pulled my eyes away from Daxon and focused on the technician. She put on some clear gloves and sat beside my bed in front of the ultrasound machine. The screen was already on and she tilted it for everyone to see. She got the probe ready and squirted some clear blue jelly from a bottle onto it.

She held it up and pushed a button in front of her. “Are you ready to meet your baby?”

I took a deep breath and blew it out. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

“Could you lift your shirt just below your bra?” She asked.

I followed her instructions and pulled it up. My fingers tucked the fabric underneath my bra to keep it out of the way. I wanted nothing to screw this up. I needed to be sure my baby was going to be healthy. My life may be crazy, but my pregnancy didn’t have to be.

“Is this good enough?” I asked with uncertainty.

She nodded her head and said. “Now this jelly might be a little cold, so just bear with me.”

The probe touched my warm belly, and I jerked a little. The slight chill from the jelly gave me a bit of a shock, but as she moved it around, it warmed up. She pressed in certain areas and gave me the urge to urinate, but I held it in. They instructed me to drink lots of water hours before my appointment and not to pee. And the need to use the bathroom was strong.

Suddenly, I heard a sound beat so loudly beside me and it made me raise my head. I tilted it to view the screen and didn’t know what I was looking at. I saw two black sacs and the sound from the machine was getting stronger. It sounded like two different beats very close to each other and I became nervous.

“What is that sound?” I asked as my palms grew sweaty and I looked at the technician.

“That is the sound of your baby’s heartbeat.” She answered, but appeared puzzled.

She pressed a button several times and moved the probe to the right of my belly. She searched for things I didn’t understand and wished I could. This was my baby, and I needed to be sure he or she was going to be okay.

“Is something wrong?” Dylan asked as he picked up on my tension and touched my leg.

“I just have to be certain...” She breathed as she moved the probe again and to the left side of my stomach.

“Certain of what?” Daxon asked impatiently, and I could hear the worry in his voice.

I looked up at him and the concern he held for me was there. The distress that something could be wrong with the baby. It swirled around in his eyes as he stepped closer and touched my ankle. The instinctive need was there to touch me and it was the closest part of me he could touch.

“I had to be certain there were two babies and not just one.” She replied with a smile and looked down at me. “You’re having twins, Celeste.”

“What?” I breathed in disbelief.

She pointed at the screen. “See these two black sacs? Each one is for a different baby. You are having fraternal twins and these are your babies moving inside their own placenta.”

Tears blurred my vision and streamed down my face. I couldn’t believe my eyes as I followed her instructions and realized it was true. I was having twins.

Two babies with two unique personalities. Two heartbeats with two passions for life. And two babies that would look the same.

“I can’t believe this.” Dylan whispered from beside me. “We’re having twins.”

He looked at the screen and couldn’t take his eyes away from the babies. We could see their little blobs move, but nothing more. I couldn’t understand anything else I saw and fell in love with their heartbeats. It was the most precious sound I could ever imagine. I knew they were alive and everything was going to be okay. I felt it deep down inside.

My eyes caught Daxon’s, and they shimmered in the light. He didn’t look at the babies and only at me. I knew he couldn’t believe it and was just as shocked as everyone else. But pure relief fell over him and his emotions got the best of him.
