Suddenly, the front doorbell rang, and I was relieved. I needed a distraction and hurried for the front door. I felt underdressed answering it, but someone had to. Maybe it was my lost luggage?

My hand grasped the doorknob, and I gave it a hard tug. The chilly morning air filled the entryway and my wavy locks slightly blew with it. A man dressed in normal clothes was present with my luggage right beside him.

“I have luggage for a Celeste Lovette?” The gentleman said as he looked down at his paperwork and back at me.

“That would be me.” I beamed with happiness and took my luggage handle.

“I’m sorry for the slight delay.” He apologized.

“Not a problem. Have a good day.” I said as I brought my luggage inside and closed the door to his slight nod.

I hurried it through the entryway and into the kitchen. “Look what finally arrived!”

I presented him with my luggage and felt excited. He flashed me a dashing smile and I could’ve melted. He was so incredibly handsome. All in his own silver fox way.

“That’s great because breakfast is served.” He announced as he laid a waffle on a plate and pushed it towards me.

I sat down on the fancy stool and dug into it at the island. The waffles were delicious, with just the right amount of butter and maple syrup. It coated my hungry stomach and built up the energy I lost last night.

Daxon ate while he cooked, and I couldn’t help but watch him. He was in his element and it looked damn good on him. He served me bacon and eggs on another plate, but chewed on a crunchy piece of meat. The sink filled up with soapy water and he did the dishes. He got his hands wet and scrubbed the frying pan he no longer needed. He washed all the dishes except mine and turned around to look at me.

His face grew serious and unreadable. “A limousine should be here shortly. You can stay if you wish, but I have to leave.”

My eyes searched him with questions, but I received no answer. “Why? I thought we were staying for a few days? Dylan planned this entire trip and...”

“Well, plans change and I have to work.” He snapped at me bitterly.

“Okay, but what about Dylan? He’ll wonder why you left.” I explained and pleaded with him to stay. “He wants us to get along and we’re supposed to fake it till we make it, remember?”

“I think we’ve gotten along a little too well.” Daxon said sternly with his voice on edge. “I think we’ve proved our point.”

I knew exactly where he was going with this. He referred to our night together as a mistake, and it was his way of creating that wall he had built up so high. A wall around his heart that no one could break because it broke a long time ago.

I understood and nodded my head. “I’ll get dressed and be ready to go.”

But it shattered my heart into a million pieces.

I pushed away my food. “I’ve suddenly lost my appetite.”

I left the room and pulled my luggage behind me. It felt as heavy as my broken heart. I had gone and fallen for a man who could never return my feelings. But it stung so badly.

How could I let this happen?

Now, I had to agree to a loveless marriage and try to maintain some sort of normal with Daxon around. He was Dylan’s father, and I had no idea how I was going to make it work. But I had no choice.

I got dressed as quickly as I could with the bit of notice of our departure and gathered all my belongings. I brushed my hair and tied it up in a messy bun. The world felt like it was ending and I was on the borderline of tears. They stung my eyes and wanted to fall, but I didn’t let them. I had to remain strong and push forward. I had to draw a line somewhere for myself and for my sanity.

I needed to end this secret affair once and for all.

I blew out the breath I held and headed for the front door. Our getaway was over, and so were our secret moments together. He needed to keep his distance from me so this could be bearable. I needed him to stop this game we fell into so my heart would stop breaking.

Daxon stood beside the long limousine stretched out near the front of the cabin. The sunlight glistened in his salt and pepper hair. I wanted to run my fingers through it, wrap my hands around the nape of his neck, and kiss him senseless. But I ignored my wishful thoughts and plastered on a fake smile just for him.

I gave my luggage and carry-on to the driver. Daxon opened the door for me, but I stopped in front of him and looked him straight in the eyes. He peered back at me with unreadable cold eyes, the same old ruthless man I met just over a year ago. He hadn’t changed and never could. Not even for me.

“This twisted game we’ve been playing is over, Daxon.” I told him as my heart broke and I held up my fake composure. “We can’t keep having sex behind Dylan’s back. It’s wrong and we need to move on because I’m marrying your son. I was never yours to begin with.”

I stepped forward to get in the limousine, but he grabbed my wrist. My eyes shot towards his and they blazed at me with dominance. My pussy pulsated at his thirst for lust. But that’s all he appeared to think of me.
