“I just came in to see if you’re doing okay. I saw how big your eyes got when Massimo walked in, and you saw his injuries.” He looks down at the floor and seems a little bit ashamed.

“Yeah, he’s pretty messed up,” I say with a little chuckle. “Did you do all of that to him?”

I get off the bed and walk over to my desk to tidy it a little. I’m trying to keep my hands busy on something other than Blaze.

“Yeah. I got a little carried away,” he says, lifting one of his shoulders and rubbing the back of his neck.

Rolling my lips inward to stop myself from laughing, I reply, “Well, he did kind of have it coming.”

That earns me a laugh. It’s cute in a manly and gruff kind of way.

“Is he still here?”

“Yeah, unfortunately. I was just about to leave, so long as you feel safe with me gone, that is. I know your dad would protect you, but from what you were saying, Massimo seems to get you when your dad’s not really around or concentrating,” he says, pressing his lips into a tight line.

Not wanting to be the reason he stays, I try to think of something that might make us both feel more at ease.

“I’ll be fine, but could you please do me a favor first and go and get my cell for me? I think I left it on the coffee table?” I ask.

He nods and goes to retrieve it.

Chapter Eleven

Blaze

God, Lake steals my breath, but not in a bad way. It’s as though she has me in a chokehold after I’ve been punched in the gut. The feeling is akin to being winded while my brain is starved of oxygen, and I can’t, for the life of me, get the amount of air I need. It sucks the air right out of my lungs, and I’m struggling to take a deep, sufficient breath.

I close the door behind me and take a deep breath, feeling only slightly relieved now I’m out of her room.

When I walk into the living room, I realize Enzo has gone somewhere, probably to grab a nightcap. Massimo grunts as I pass him, but I ignore him. My objective is to get Lake’s cell phone, that is all. I’m not going to engage with him anymore tonight.

Screw him.

Not seeing Lake’s cell straightaway, I scour the room for it. I look under the paperwork on the coffee table and between the sofa cushions before I see it on the armrest of Massimo’s chair.

“Is that Lake’s?” I ask sternly. He shrugs, and I snatch it, pressing the home key.

Her background is of her as a little girl with her parents, all of them smiling. Lake looks so young, carefree, and innocent. I can definitely see where she gets her good looks from.

Sorry, Enzo—it’s from her mom. They both have beautiful, lush dark-brown hair and the same green eyes. Although, Lake is much more beautiful, sexier, even. She has an alluring look to her, whereas her mom, while beautiful in her own right, looks more wholesome.

Her cell has a security lock on it, so I know Massimo, the shit, wasn’t snooping. I clench my fist, trying to hold back anotherpunch to his ugly, smug face, just for the sake of being the smart-ass he is. I restrain myself, though, not wanting to out myself as Massimo’s attacker to Enzo.

Obviously, Massimo hasn’t ratted me out, and it’s best he doesn’t. I’m not sure Enzo would like the fact his best friend of however many years has been trying to feel up his daughter. Lake was right—he had it coming. He’s lucky I held back from beating him to death.

Not like what happened the last time I lost control.

Enzo walks back into the room with a now-full glass of whiskey. “Do you boys want a drink?”

“No thanks, Enzo. I’m just going to take Lake’s cell up to her, and I’ll be leaving.”

I walk off before I can hear Massimo’s voice. It’ll only make me want to punch him more.

Heading up the stairs to give Lake her cell phone back, I hear Massimo saying goodbye to Enzo for the night—good fucking riddance. Lake will be happy, and I will feel more comfortable knowing the filthy rat isn’t under the same roof as her.

Reaching her door, I knock again.

“Come in.”
