CHAPTER32

AMBER

According to my mum, I’d always been a romantic. Even as a little girl. Disney films didn’t interest me unless there was a handsome hero and beautiful heroine. Give me Cinderella over Dumbo any day. It was that idealistic view which had probably made me believe in Jimmy. He was a handsome hero who had saved me from loneliness, and he’d been good at kissing and sex, too. The romance not so much, but I didn’t know any better.

Sitting on a boat, lit with fairy lights and sailing down the Seine while drinking wine was so much more romantic than anything I’d ever experienced before. The fact that Ronnie and I were alone only added to it. My heart was full as we sat together, my hand in his as we chatted and watched Paris go by.

Or it was the most romantic experience, until we took the lift to the summit of the Eifel Tower. We reached the top just before ten, so as we walked out onto the viewing area it lit up and began to sparkle.

“Oh my god, Ronnie. It’s beautiful.”

“Yeah,” he said, plainly in awe as he gazed around. “It really is.”

He pulled me in front of him, wrapping his arms around my waist and positioning us against the rail. The panorama was stunning with the whole of Paris lit up around us, taking my breath away. Ronnie was perfectly still behind me except for his arms going tighter and his breath whispering against my neck. As he dropped a kiss on my shoulder, I shivered.

“Are you cold?”

“No. I’m fine.”

I was more than fine. The breeze had dropped, the summer night was still warm, and I had a gorgeous, sexy man wrapped around me. I wasn’t cold or frightened, I was trembling with need. Being with Ronnie all day had intensified everything that I felt about him. His kindness, his sweetness, his sexiness, his funniness. He was just incredible in my eyes. Never once had he crossed the line, yet I knew it would have been easy to as the day had gone on. Especially when we were lying in the park. I was sure he didn’t think I’d noticed the erection behind his jeans, but he still tried to hide it. While he was tickling me, I was hoping that his hands would wander to my boobs, or maybe up my dress where I was throbbing for him. Yet, Ronnie remained a gentleman.

“Those cars look tiny,” Ronnie said close to my ear. “All going about their evening having no clue that we’re up here watching them.”

“Do you think their day has been as good as ours?”

“Not a chance.”

I smiled and covered Ronnie’s hands with mine, linking our fingers. He curled his inwards, clasping us together, like he was trying to create an unbreakable bond.

“I feel like I’ve known you forever.” I didn’t look at him but continued watching the city below me as I whispered, “Not just a few months.” Finally, I turned my head. “Don’t you?”

“I do,” he replied, kissing my neck and tightening his arms at my waist. “It’s not like I’ve known the boys for years, you know where we can finish each other’s sentences. It’s different.”

“Like I can’t remember life without you in it.”

Ronnie let out a ragged breath. “Exactly like that. I just wish that we didn’t have all the crap going on with Jimmy.”

“Can we not talk about him?” I groaned light heartedly. “We’re back to reality tomorrow. Can’t we just pretend he doesn’t exist for today?”

“I’d like to do that every day.” Resting his chin on my shoulder, Ronnie chuckled. “Maybe we should have invited him with us and then pushed him off here.”

“No, the boat would have been better. He can’t swim.”

Ronnie’s chest shook against my back as he chuckled. “You think he had a better chance of dying being pushed off a boat rather than from about a thousand meters in the sky?”

Grinning, I said, “Well now you come to mention it.”

“Drowning would have been slower, so maybe you’re right.”

“God, we’re terrible,” I said with gasp. “Plotting the death of my husband.”

“Estranged?”

He said it like it was a question. With doubt and his need for assurance.

“Definitely estranged and future divorced husband.”

His body relaxed against mine and relief flooded through me. I hadn’t realised that I’d needed to know he was as committed as I was. Turning in his arms, I looked up at him and rubbed my fingertips across his furrowed brow, my eyes trying to show him my truth.
