Rylee

Isittherewaiting. For what? I don’t know. James hasn’t come back yet. I have no sense of time, but I assume it’s been a few hours. I can’t stop thinking about what it is he will do to me. He said it goes deeper? Deeper than what exactly? My mind is all over the place. How can my life go from being so perfect, to everything crashing down within a few months?

Scanning the room again, I hope something will pop out that will help me get out of here. But there is nothing. I want to know what’s going on, but I don’t want to see him. He terrifies me, and I don’t know how far he may go. I have never seen this side of James. Why did I not see it? Toni knew something wasn’t right with him. Cash always had a problem and then . . . Just the thought of his name makes my heart crack all over again. Jace. Something happened between them, and he never told me.

As if he was listening to my thoughts, he unlocks the door. My head snaps up, and I focus on the door as it opens. My breath hitches as I wait for him to walk through. When he appears, a cold flush takes over my body. There is nothing warm about him. He’s like a whole different person.

“Where has the kind James gone?”

His eyebrows raise to his hairline, and then he throws his head back and laughs. He closes the door behind him, then turns and stalks toward me.

“Oh sweet, sweet Rylee. You don’t get it, do you?” He tilts his head to the side and then juts his bottom lip out.

“The James at the bar the other night. He doesn’t exist. He’s fake.”

He stops a few feet away from me and brings his arms out to the side.

“This right here is the real deal, and fuck me, I’ve missed him.” The smile that forms on his face fills my entire body with dread. He was lying all along. The James I knew doesn’t exist. Tears leak from my eyes, one after the other, as I drop my head and bring my hands to my face. He’s not going to let me go no matter what I say.

I hear a scurry before his cold hands land on mine, then I jump back on the bed as much as I can.

“Don’t touch me,” I spit, pushing my hands out in front of me, as if they will shield me from him.

“Oh, princess.” He sighs. “You’re mine, I’ll touch you whenever the hell I feel like it.” My anger quickly forms as he leans forward and grabs my face with one hand, his fingers gripping my cheeks so hard, I know he will leave fingerprints behind. My eyes squint from the pressure.

He gets nose to nose with me, and the pain evaporates. What is he doing? I stay as still as a statue. I don’t even want to breathe. His breaths hit my lips, making me feel sick.

“You’re mine,” he whispers against my lips before pushing himself forward and presses his lips to mine. I don’t move. It takes me a few seconds to catch on, but when his tongue enters my mouth, I punch him, and he lets go. I jump off the bed and run for the door. I know he didn’t lock it, and as I approach the door, a feeling of hope floods me.

A harsh grip pulls at my shoulder, and I fly backward. My back and head hit the floor, and I cry out from the pain.

I hiss, rubbing at the spot, trying to get rid of the sting.

“That’s what you get for acting silly, Rylee,” he scolds. “You can never just behave, can you. Jace always said you had fire in you. I see what he means now.” His eyes roam me as if he enjoys me not being compliant.Who the fuck is this person?

“Don’t say his fucking name. His name does not come out of your mouth again, you don’t deserve to speak his name.”

He points to his chest. “I don’t deserve, no? Of course I don’t. Jace was too perfect, wasn’t he, Rylee. Tell me”—he holds his chin and looks up to the ceiling—“if he was so perfect, then why did he overdose, clearly something wasn’t right.” He smiles down at me.

Tears prick my eyes at the reminder. “He didn’t overdose,” I say through clenched teeth, trying to delay the breakdown my body is approaching.

“No, no he didn’t, did he.” James crouches down in front of me and glares at me dead in the eyes.

“Then ask yourself, Rylee. How did those drugs get in his body.” His eyes flicker between mine as a small smile creeps on his face.

My whole body starts to tremble.

“No. No. No.” I shake my head as I crawl backward.

“You.” I point at him. I can’t even say it. Please, please tell me this isn’t happening.

“Ding. Ding. Ding.” He smiles as if it’s an achievement and something he’s proud of.

“It finally sets in. It took you a while, Rylee. But yes, it was me. I spiked Jace’s drink that night. I’m the reason he crashed. I’m the reason he’s dead.” His sinister smile is back, and I get lightheaded as the room spins. My heart beats so fast, and a panic attack encroaches on me. Black spots fill my vision as my body becomes a dead weight and I fall to the ground. The monster who ruined my life and took everything from me looms overhead as darkness takes me under.
